How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Licensed Journeyman Electrician
coordinates and completes projects to ensure jobs are accomplished in a cost-effective manner.  Ensures electrical equipment and systems are maintained, installed and calibrated to ensure a safe, efficient and continuous operation of Metro Transit public and support facilities.  Communicates with management, process engineers, operations and electrical workforce.  Performs other duties as assigned.

This recruitment will establish a six (6) month Eligibility List for current and future vacancies.

Note: All new hires start at $51.71 per hour and all shifts and job information will be governed by ATU seniority and the union agreement. Please note: this position will require the flexibility to work days, nights, evenings and weekends.
  • Completes the work to inspect, repair, maintain and test facility electrical equipment and coordinates work activities with other maintenance and operation personnel. 
  • Works with construction projects on related activities such as design, installation, start-up, and revise design plans as needed.
  • Coordinates activities such retrofitting, removing/installing equipment and coordinates activities with engineering staff.
  • Performs routine circuit tests and maintenance.
  • Directs the inspecting, adjusting, calibrating and testing of metering and recording devices.
  • Oversees apprentice and upgrade of licenses for other electricians and provides support to increase their skills and training.
  • Responsible for the security inventory needs and approving purchases.
  • Reviews jobs update permits, keeps Metro Transit compliant with all codes and regulations.
  • Ensure safety procedures and notify supervisor of hazardous equipment of activities.
  • Coordinates work activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Graduate of two year vocational/technical program in electrician construction or similar electrical licensing program.

Experience: Completion of state electrician journeyman apprentice program. Completion of required continuing education courses to maintain active license. Experience in all aspects of assembling, installing, maintaining and testing electrical equipment and wiring systems in a commercial/ industrial setting.  Applicants must have extensive experience in the service, diagnosis and repair of electrical equipment in a commercial/industrial environment.

License Requirements:  
  • A current Minnesota State Journeyman Electrical License.   
  • Ability to obtain a Class A driver's License (training will be provided by Metro Transit).
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Ability to perform the duties of the job safely, efficiently and in compliance with all applicable rules and regulations without direct supervision, including the ability to operate required vehicles or equipment
  • Internal ATU candidates must have a good work record in order to be eligible for transfer
  • Mechanic knowledge; to apply electronic controls to function of equipment
  • Logic and math skills to understand operation of intricate electrical and electronic equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, verbal and electronic form
  • Ability to provide work direction to others
  • Ability to work with others

Work Environment:  Work is performed in Metro Transit facilities, buildings and outdoors. Some travel is required. May require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions, and in high precarious places. Exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibration, atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation, hazardous materials such as chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and work space restricts movement, and intense noise may occur on the job.

Physical Requirements: May require standing, walking, talking or hearing using hands to finger, handle or feeling and reaching with hands and arms, lifting up to 50 pounds. May have to work near moving parts or equipment, in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. Works in high precarious places and confined spaces. Operated aerial equipment, lift and climb ladders.  Must be able to identify and distinguish colors. May also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.

  • We rate your education and experience.
  • We conduct a structured panel interview.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Councilyou must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history.  A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job.  If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Councilyou must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job you're applying for is safety sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards.  A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
