Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides more than 80 million rides a year through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.    
 
How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: 

The Supervisor, Traction Power position supervises the traction power department; creates and implements a training program for traction power technicians; and reviews new installations of equipment and design specifications to provide additional oversight for the Traction Power department.
  • Supervises and prioritizes workflow of the traction power department employees. Department includes: three forepersons, thirteen traction power maintainers and one traction power maintainer trainee. These employees work three shifts. Workflow includes managing inspections, tracking tasks, and prioritizing daily work assignments of the department.
  • Supervises the work unit through evaluating staff performance, providing constructive feedback on performance to hourly employees, and initiating appropriate disciplinary action and follow up.
  • Assists with management of the traction power department operations.
  • Oversees the inspection process managing follow-up and successful closure of requests.
  • Provides oversight for the system ensuring effective, useful solutions adhering to rail growth strategies and present utilization requirements.
  • Assists in minor design/construction changes to the traction power system.
  • Assists with the design specifications and implementation with project engineers.
  • Manages new installations of equipment.
  • Performs on-site investigations and coordinates solutions to complaints of power loss.
  • Communicates with individuals throughout the organization to assess support needed from the traction power department.
  • Interfaces with Metro Transit contractors. Manages daily Gopher One tickets and assigns corresponding work direction.
  • Acts as primary contact during emergency situations requiring troubleshooting (i.e., storms, broken, insulators, etc.).
  • Coordinates with contractors regarding requests for power to be disabled.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records for all assigned employees including payroll and approval of overtime. 
  • Communicates and coordinates projects with manager and other outside agencies.
  • Participates in selection of department staff adhering to affirmative action plan.
  • Accountable for the development of program maintenance procedures compliance. Trains and qualifies employees on the use of equipment and proper maintenance and repair procedures. 
  • Accountable for knowledge and implementation of policies and procedures within the Metropolitan Council.
  • Provides technical support, instruction, and training to traction power personnel for safety, policies, rules, instructions, inspection procedures, and equipment.
  • Act as backup to manage the traction power maintenance department in the absence of the manager.
  • Performs other duties directly related to this position as assigned.
Any of the following combinations of completed education (in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Repair and Installations, or closely related field) with at least one (1) year of supervisory or lead worker, this includes experience as a foreman or employee in charge:
  • High school diploma/GED and eight (8) years of experience, with one (1) year of supervisory or lead work.
  • Associate degree and six (6) years of experience, with one (1) year of supervisory or lead work.
  • Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of experience, with one (1) year of supervisory or lead work.

Metropolitan Council Employees Only: Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.
 
 Metro Transit Leadership Academy = 1 year
 Project Management Development Program (12-month session) = 1 year
 Project Management Development Program (6-month session) = 6 months
 Four Learning Institute Certificates - You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.
  • Leading Self-Personal Effectiveness Certificate
  • Leading Self-Communication Certificate
  • Leading Self-Business Skills Certificate
  • Leading Others-Preparing for Supervision Certificate 

Licensure Requirement:

  • A valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.  
  • Minnesota Class A Journeyman Electrical License, Class A Master's License, or Class A Journeyman Lineman's License or the ability to obtain a Class A CDL Driver's License and ability to meet ongoing DOT physical requirements.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in the job (desired qualifications): 

  • Ability to pass ON Track Safety Training.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Blueprint reading. 

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:  

  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance repair and replacement of Traction Power systems to support maintenance activities. 
  • Knowledge of IEEE, FRA, AREMA, APTA and NEC recommended maintenance practices.
  • Skills in written communications sufficient to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to research information, find contacts, vendors, specification sheets, catalog information.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or clients.
  • Ability to schedule and prioritize shift maintenance activities.

What your work environment would be: 

This position may work in high precarious places, in extreme hot and cold (non-weather) conditions and work around vibration, up to one-third (1/3) of the time. The position may also work in wet, humid (non-weather) conditions, and near moving mechanical parts or equipment up to two-thirds (2/3) of the time. Position may work in outdoor weather conditions and with risk of electrical shock two-thirds (2/3) or more of the time. This position may work around loud noise.

Physical Requirements: 

This position may climb or balance up to one-third (1/3) of the time, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, up to two-thirds (2/3) of the time. Position may also require standing, walking, talking or hearing, two-thirds (2/3) or more of the time.

The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
