Assistant Director of Communications
Salary: $95,731 - $110,820

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Lead and oversee all marketing, branding, messaging, and communication efforts for the Agency.
• Manage communications team, providing expertise, guidance, support and professional development opportunities.
• Create and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with the Agency's goals and objectives.
• Act as project manager for all communication initiatives, ensuring projects are completed on time and within scope.
• Develop and implement crisis communications procedures, including drafting response protocols, coordinating messaging strategies and ensuring timely and effective communication with stakeholders.
• Serve as point of contact for the media and a spokesperson for the Agency.
• Create and distribute press releases, articles and other materials to the news media.
• Build and maintain relationships with media to promote the Agency's initiatives and achievements.
• Prepare staff and MDHA Board members for media interviews and public appearances.
• Plan, coordinate and oversee the Agency’s special events including groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings.
• Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on internal and external communication matters.
• Craft speeches, talking points and PowerPoint presentation copy for senior leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, strategic priorities and key messaging.
• Lead the strategic planning and content creation of the annual report.
• Coordinate with all MDHA departments to ensure communication efforts support organizational priorities and strategic goals.
• Collaborate with communications staff at Metro departments, including the Mayor's Office, to align messaging and initiatives.
• Engage with stakeholders, partners and community leaders to foster relationships and enhance the Agency's presence.
• Spearhead the strategic planning of the annual calendar, overseeing the development and alignment of content.
• Edit additional internal and external marketing material including feature stories, newsletters, publications, flyers, PowerPoint presentations, manuals, requests for proposals and reports.
• Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all platforms and materials including the Agency’s website and social media channels.
• Track and report on communication metrics, using data to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and initiatives.
• Stay updated on industry trends and recommend innovative approaches to improve communication strategies.
• Manage and update department budget.
• Represent chief of staff when assigned.
• Perform weekend and after-hours work as needed.
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the chief of staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Behavioral Skills:
Ability to effectively write speeches, position papers, talking points, memos, articles, and annual reports; ability to analyze data on web traffic and make recommendations on utilizing social media in communications strategies; ability to conduct research and prepare reports as assigned by the chief of staff and his/her designee; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, laws and regulations pertaining to the publication of information; knowledge of programs and activities relating to urban and community development, public housing, rental assistance, affordable housing, commercial revitalization, and the policies and procedures of MDHA; working knowledge of social media, primarily, but not limited to Facebook as well as Twitter and other web applications: working knowledge of photography and photographic equipment.
Technical Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively in all forms of information media with the public, the Board of Commissioners and departments aof the Metropolitan Government; ability to speak effectively in public to large groups and with the news media; ability to plan, organize and direct various public relations programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the press and news media, and public and private entities; ability to write clearly and understandably; ability to occasionally work under tight deadlines; strong organizational skills, especially in the area of collaborating with Metro agencies on organizing events and announcements.
Physical Skills:
Willingness and mental and physical abilities to perform the duties involved in this classification. Ability to perform work with or without an accommodation that requires sitting, standing, and walking, dexterity of hands and clarity of vision, speech and hearing and powers of observation; other physical duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, business administration or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant experience in the fields of public/media relations, communications, or marketing. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of the Nashville/Middle Tennessee media market and to those with experience in organizations similar to MDHA.
