What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant Senior - Operations position at Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County?
This is a Civil Service position in the Department of Finance, Operations, Division of Accounts. The position Accountant Senior - Operations is responsible for performing the more complex professional and technical duties involved in financial accounting at the government-wide level. This position requires strong analytical, oral, written, and organizational skills. The selected applicant will also have a demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted governmental accounting principles.
Metro Finance has several divisions, including operations, procurement, treasury and management and budget. Department employees provide financial management, information and business products to policy makers, departments, investors and the Nashville community to give them confidence in our government and to help them make informed decisions.
- Directs, coordinates and participates in the more complex financial accounting issues and resolve complex financial accounting related questions and/or problems.
- Performs professional duties in support of accounting related general ledger modules.
- Analyzes ledger balances, process payments, track information, prepare and complete journal entries as necessary. {Areas of responsibility to include Sports Authority, Central Business Improvement District (CBID)/Gulch Central Business Improvement District (GCBID), Economic and Community Development (ECD) grants, Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) tax increment payments, and various department assignments}.
- Responsible for various accounting reconciliations including the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) capital accounts, MTA LOCAP account and other reconciliations as needed.
- Gathers information, calculate and prepare Industrial Development Board (IDB) Payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) billings on an annual basis.
- Ensures the monthly Sports Authority revenue is recorded, tracked and processed correctly.
- Analyzes and corrects Administrative and Finance budget overages as required.
- Interprets, applies and provides authoritative advice on financial accounting policies and procedures.
- Functions as primary accounting contact for other Metro departments as assigned; review and approve journal entries submitted by departments and other accountants.
- Analyzes and reconcile general and subsidiary ledgers in the accounting system and make adjustments/corrections as needed.
- Assists departmental accounting staff to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
- Assists with the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
- Leads, supervises and trains staff as assigned and oversee complex projects within the Division of Accounts as required.
- Works autonomously on projects as needed and perform independent research to formulate best practice solutions.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university and (4) four years of professional-level experience in accounting or related field.

- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification
- Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and financial statement audit experience.
- Experience preparing or auditing annual comprehensive financial reports or other issued governmental financial reports.
- Experience with governmental accounting operations and enterprise-wide general ledger systems.
- Proficient in detailed analysis of general ledger accounts and financial records.
- MS Office skills (Word, Excel) Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills
