What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineer Intern-NDOT position at Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County?
The Engineer Intern position is an academic learning internship designed to provide the incumbent with experience in a professional work environment and preparing them for a career in the field of transportation engineering. Positions are available in the Infrastructure Development, Delivery, and Management (Engineering) division of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT). Interns will get hands on exposure on Metro’s Vision Zero Initiative; Intelligent Transportation System deployments; and infrastructure design and construction projects.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.**** Internship is Part-Time (Temporary) 12 weeks/ May 5-July 25,2025****
- Learns skills for preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates on transportation infrastructure projects.
- Learns methods for investigating construction and design problems.
- Learns how to perform research studies for project analysis.
- Learns skills on preparing, reviewing, and deploying traffic calming projects.
- Learns about Metro’s Vision Zero Initiative and supports the implementation of traffic safety engineering and education focused efforts.
- Learns the basics on traffic studies/surveys.
- Learns how to collect engineering data.
- Receives education on emerging transportation engineering technology systems.
- Learns skills on the application of MUTCD guidelines and other traffic engineering standards.
- Receives education in conducting on-site inspections of municipal projects.
- Receives education on analyzing technical data and preparing technical reports.
Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university. (Must be a classified as a college Junior or Senior. Internship is for a 12-week period.)
