The Planner 3 - Senior Land Planner - (Greenways & Open Space) manages the planning, design, construction and acquisition of public park land and greenway facilities by applying knowledge of urban and recreation planning, architectural and landscape design, sustainable development and best practices in construction to the management of park capital projects.  The position is located within the Greenways & Open Space Division of the Metro Nashville Parks Department and assists with staff management and supervision of a designated team.


Metro Parks offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County including after-school programs for children, cultural arts classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, fitness classes, art galleries, programs and services for seniors, as well as for those with disabilities.  Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 178 parks and 100 miles of greenway. Metro Parks’ mission is to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Nashville with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness, and quality of life through recreation, conservation, and community.


  • Implement short and long-range recommendations as established in adopted departmental planning documents.
  • Lead strategic planning initiatives with internal and external team members.
  • Prepare request for proposals (RFPs) and invitations to bid.
  • Manage projects, teams, architects, general contractors and other consultants to ensure successful and efficient project delivery.
  • Responsibly manage multi-million-dollar project budgets.
  • Prepare and participate in capital budget processes.
  • Guide and review the development of design documents for compliance with established park facility standards and departmental goals.
  • Ensure project compliance with Metro procurement, regulatory and policy processes, requirements and goals.
  • Integrate sustainable development best practices in all projects.
  • Coordinate all projects with relevant divisions, departments, elected officials, partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist division director in supervising and managing staff.
  • Document and maintain files on all projects.
  • Lead public input processes; respond to constituent inquiries; collaborate with non-governmental organizations; prepare public presentations and engagements, reports and other documents.
  • Manage or participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Perform various administrative duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of planning experience

OR

Master's Degree in Planning or related field from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of planning experience.


Employees must register for the Metro Human Resources Supervisory Training Program prior to completion of the probationary period or work test and must complete all coursework within a 12-month period.

LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid Driver License

 Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

  • A degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, sustainable development, construction management or related field and experience in planning, design, construction and/or project management
  • Experience in community, urban, recreation planning or design
  • Proficiency in ArcMap, Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, Sketch-Up and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in the supervision and management of projects and people
  • Experience in project budgeting and public procurement processes
