The Special Programs Coordinator - Outdoor Recreation is a full time Civil Service position in the Metro Parks and Recreation department.  The primary duties of this position consist of planning, instructing, and facilitating outdoor and adventure recreation activities for diverse populations, including children, adults, and seniors. The purpose is to expand nature based outdoor recreational opportunities designed to get people outdoors in a fun and active way and to expose and educate them about the natural world. The programs should include skill-based activities such as paddling (canoe, kayak, paddle board), climbing and hiking, mountain biking, camping and other outdoor programs.   Work shift is typically Tuesday – Saturday but can vary depending on scheduling of events.  


Metro Parks offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County including after-school programs for children, cultural arts classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, fitness classes, art galleries, programs, and services for seniors, as well as for those with disabilities.  Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 178 parks and 100 miles of greenway. Metro Parks’ mission is to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Nashville with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness, and quality of life through recreation, conservation, and community.

  • Develops, coordinate, and lead participants in a wide variety of outdoor recreation programs.
  • Collaborates with Nature Center Managers, Community Center Managers and private groups to schedule activities, engage naturalists, and promote programs.
  • Provides training in areas related to outdoor recreation and outdoor safety to the public and to Parks staff.
  • Monitors programs and perform related activities to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Proposes fees, invoice, handle receipts, payment processing and keep track of financial records.
  • Recruits, train and supervise outdoor recreation program staff.
  • Ensures rules and regulations pertaining to parks programs, and industry standards for land/water based outdoor recreation activities are followed.
  • Promotes outdoor recreation programs through website, social media, email lists and printed materials.
  • Supervises, maintain and care for the inventory of outdoor recreation equipment and other supplies needed for programs and ensure equipment is safe and adequate.
  • Establishes and maintain open communication with internal and external customers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job requires vigorous outdoor activity such as hiking, kayaking, climbing.   Work is often in remote and undeveloped outdoor areas.

This position is subject to pre-employment & random drug/BAT testing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor Degree in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education, Education or related field and two (2) years of responsible Outdoor Recreation or Environmental Education experience

**Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education**

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Valid driver license

First Aid, CPR/AED certification

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
  • Experience with GIS mapping, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement is a plus
  • Wilderness First Responder or other outdoor recreation certifications
  • An innovative mindset, eager to create sustainable and engaging outdoor experiences
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in environmental education nature/interpretive center management, outdoor recreation and natural resource management
