The Metro Nashville Public Health Department (MPHD) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated professional to join our team as the Assistant to the Director of Public Health. This pivotal role serves under the direction of the Director of Public Health, performing a range of technical, administrative, and managerial duties. As a senior advisor and liaison, the Assistant to the Director will play a crucial role in supporting the Director of Health and ensuring the effective operation of the department.Key Responsibilities: Serve as a senior advisor and liaison for the Director of Health.Perform technical, administrative, and managerial public health duties.Act as an administrator and liaison for the Director of Health.Participate as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of the Nashville community by supporting the strategic initiatives and daily operations of the MPHD. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assist the Director: Coordinate initiatives led by the Director’s Office, including the annual report.Prepare planning materials, reports, and other necessary documents.Plan and implement staff development programs, such as supervisor training.Recommend improvements to administrative policies and procedures.Conduct public health training sessions as needed.Handle requests made to the Director and ensure timely responses.Assist staff in decision-making during the Director's absence by explaining the Director's perspective and ensuring departmental policies are applied.Ensure fair implementation of policies across all bureaus.Research topics and draft presentations or speeches as requested by the Director.Return calls and draft correspondence for the Director.Assist in operations control, budget analysis, and program effectiveness evaluation.Maintain effective relationships with civic groups and interdepartmental teams. Serve as a Liaison: Maintain communication with the Board of Health, Bureau Directors, stakeholders.Represent the Director at meetings, take notes, and follow up on items.Prepare the Executive Leadership Team meeting agenda with input from the Director.Coordinate departmental activities and follow up on issues as requested by the Director.Meet regularly with the Director to plan and align work.Executive Leadership Team Member: Model cooperative and responsive leadership.Respond to public inquiries.Support staff in exemplary public health practice.Advocate for public health.Uphold the organization’s values.Help establish departmental directions.Attend appointed meetings.
