Position Description
The Transportation Superintendent oversees the Waste Services Division collection programs which includes Contractor Refuse Collection, Downtown Refuse Collection, Recycle Collection, and Front Loaders. This position will handle collection issues and concerns with Metro Contractors.
Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 143,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.
Waste Services currently employs 119 staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and zero waste.
Typical Duties
- Oversees the following Waste Services Division collection programs: Contractor Refuse Collection, Downtown Refuse Collection, Recycle Collection, and Front Loaders
- Oversees Metro trash contractors and handles complaints
- Approves leave request, and evaluates the performance for sanitation supervisors
- Counsels and reprimand employees and supervisors as needed within the Waste Services recycling and frontload collection programs
- Communicates effectively with supervisors and employees, both orally and in writing
- Analyzes problems and implement solutions
- Attends Weekly Meetings
- May be required to work during inclement weather/emergency situations
Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of college from an accredited school and five (5) years increasingly responsible experience in municipal road maintenance, and/or municipal waste collection/disposal, and/or environmental enforcement including, three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
OR
High School diploma and ten (10) years increasingly responsible experience in municipal road maintenance, and/or municipal waste collection/disposal, and/or municipal environmental enforcement including, three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
License Required
Valid Drivers License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with personnel management and regulations
- Knowledge in budgeting principles and techniques of public administration and program management
- Knowledge of vehicles, equipment, and methods commonly used in waste services management
