Under the supervision and direction of the MHS Manager and the Nurse in charge, the Patient Safety Associate (PSA) provides continuous observation and appropriate diversion activities for an assigned patient.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs basic patient monitoring activities under the supervision of an assigned Nurse.
- Observes the patient’s activity and behavior and communicates on a regular basis to the Nurse in charge or a technician.
- Assists charge Nurse with the accurate measurement and reporting of intake and output.
- Accompanies patients to medical procedures and tests and maintains observation of the patient during the procedures and tests.
- Assists patient to and from bathroom.
- Responds to changing patients'/unit's needs. During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or may transport patients as directed.
- Provides comfort, safety, and satisfaction for patient.
- Performs patient care tasks related to activities of daily living, such as feeding, hair, skin, and oral care.
- Assists with bathing, linen changes and repositioning, as directed by the Nurse in charge.
- Keeps the assigned patient as the primary responsibility at all times. Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight, unless specifically instructed by the Nurse or Technician.
- Does not engage in any other activities which would distract them from the patient. Activities such as reading, studying, sleeping, socializing, television, and phone use are prohibited.
- Documents patient’s activities every 15 minutes and provides a report to the nurse.
- Responds courteously and promptly to patient call bells and, if necessary, notifies the appropriate care team member promptly.
- Restocks supplies for the department.
- Verbalizes understanding and responsibilities during all hospital system Emergency codes.
- Maintains safe, clean and neat work environment by following standards and procedures.
- Maintains strict confidentiality related to work information (in accordance with HIPAA).
- The PSA must wait for proper relief from Nurse in charge or PSA lead before going on breaks or meals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent
- Must pass background and drug screenings.
- Previous Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or other healthcare experience preferred.
- Able to speak, read, and write English fluently.
- Must successfully complete Patient Safety Associate (PSA), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) trainings.
- Required to meet immunization or health screening requirements.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Passion for customer service and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:
Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, talk, see, and hear.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally. Must be able to push and pull 75 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to push and pull (on wheelchair) 100 to 350 pounds, frequently over considerable distance.
- Ability to working flexible schedules and extended hours is sometimes required.
- Must be able to pass medical screening for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Depending on the assignment, a PSA may be required to use PPE.
