Description
Title : ENT Surgical Tech (Certification not required)
Job Type : 13-week Contract to Permanent
Schedule : Days, 5x8s. 6 : 30a-3p. No nights, weekends, or major holidays
This is a multi-specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center. Surgical Techs with a specialty are expected to cross-train to become multi-specialty.
Reporting to the Clinical Director and according to department policies, procedures, and standards, prepares for scheduled operations, and arranges sterile set-up of instrument table. Assists surgeons by maintaining inventory and passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors, and assisting surgeons during course of surgery. Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies. Under general supervision, inspects, assembles, processes, and sterilizes instruments according to established policies and procedures for clean and dirty instruments depending on where assigned. Displays competency in less than 5 surgery services. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of patients served (6 months through adult).
Recognizes significant conditions and reactions and notifies the RN, Charge Nurse, Anesthesia provider, and / or the physician of the patient's condition. Adheres to a high standard of patient safety principles and aseptic and sterile techniques. Follows and understands the standards and recommended practices according to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and Association of Surgical Technologist (AST).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except for those that begin with the word "May.")
- Scrubs for cases according to established sterile procedures, dons sterile gown and gloves, and assists the surgeons with the same. In doing so, sets-up back table and mayo stand, counts all necessary items according to procedure, checks case supplies, and prepares supplies / equipment utilizing preference cards to assemble all necessary supplies / equipment before patient arrives in room. Displays competency (via leveling program guidelines) in less than 5 services. Services include General, Plastics, Ortho, Podiatry, Gyne, GU, Eye, ENT, and Oral Surgery.
- Observes sterile technique of all personnel, assists in draping, passes instruments, sponges, sutures, and other sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures, holds retraction devices, and acts to anticipate and respond to surgeons' needs during course of surgery.
- Receives surgical specimens, places in same preservative solutions, and notifies circulating nurse of source of material.
- Counts sponges, needles, and instruments used during surgery before closing, and assists with sterile dressing of operative site following closing.
- Assists with circulating duties under the direct supervision of registered nurse.
- Cleans operating room and disposes of used case carts and instruments according to established procedures. Assists in returning supplies and equipment to proper storage; separates, cleans, and prepares instruments as necessary, and so forth.
- Functions as a clinical resource person to various department personnel, new employees, and student technologists. Assist by precepting students and new employees.
- Attends mandatory department meetings. Keeps current regarding developments in surgical equipment, trends and techniques, through appropriate in-service programs.
- Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with department and outside agencies.
- Supports and is involved in the ASC's continuous quality improvement efforts designed to increase patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the ASC's human, capital, and physical resources.
