Civil Engineer Senior

Overview

Under general direction, perform complex, advanced civil engineering work.

PLANNING

Essential Functions

• Provide a high level of technical expertise and leadership with a development review team
• Review plans for sewerage and drainage facilities to ensure compliance with regulations and engineering design requirements
• Provide technical assistance to consulting engineers, developers and customers on sanitary and storm water drainage facilities
• Compile data
• Calculate drainage areas
• Check layout of manholes, inlet structures and pipelines, and calculate hydraulic properties of pipelines and drainage channels
• Correlate information obtained from topographic and other maps and plans;
• Perform related civil engineering work. OR Provide a high level of technical expertise and leadership with a program planning team planning for the system needs and capital improvements in the following areas: collection systems (sanitary and combined), wastewater treatment, stormwater, pump stations, and green infrastructure;
• Perform hydraulic modeling; coordinate with various groups within the District including: Operations, Design, Construction, and Development Review; monitor project schedules
• May investigate storm water, sanitary, and combined sewer complaints and recommend solutions to problems; may make necessary field inspections to determine existing conditions
• May meet with government officials, consultants, and the general public to help define District policies and responsibilities.
  
  

Additional Responsibilities: May oversee engineering team on projects; in absence of supervisor, may oversee subordinates; may perform related work as required or as delegated by supervisors.

Qualifications

Training and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering; AND a minimum of four years' experience as a licensed Professional Engineer.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering; comprehensive knowledge of District regulations and procedures applicable to sewer construction; problem-solving and communication skills necessary to work effectively with contractors, engineers, and MSD staff to ensure the successful completion of these projects; considerable knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and design software; basic knowledge in accounting; extensive skill in reading and interpreting complex engineering plans and specifications; exceptional skill in maintaining records and preparing technical reports; thorough skill in analyzing and integrating data; considerable skill in communicating effectively both in oral and written form; exceptional ability in forming and maintaining effective working relationships.

Special Requirement

Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri, or ability to obtain the Missouri Professional Engineering License within 6 months of hire.

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides.

Pursuant to MSD's "Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures," this position has been designated as non-safety sensitive and candidate must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position are not subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
