What are the responsibilities and job description for the COSI Re-engagement Navigator position at Metropolitan State University of Denver?
The COSI Navigator position reports to the Program Manager of the Transfer and Adult Student Success Center within Orientation, Transfer, and Re-engagement at MSU Denver. This position is grant-funded through the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative’s (COSI) Finish What You Started (FWYS) grant, with the role focused on recruiting students to re-enroll and supporting students as they work towards completion goals. As part of the grant, this position is responsible for the active outreach, recruitment, and re-engagement of students who have stopped-out of college. In collaboration with many MSU Denver entities this position will work with students who have stopped out of college to enroll to MSU Denver and initiate a completion plan to graduation. The COSI Navigator will directly serve a caseload of 100 – 200 students each year, providing holistic case management, programming, and outreach to support student persistence and successful completion. The Navigator will meet with students one-on-one to help them through the process of re-engaging in college, referring them to resources, and providing personalized assistance and advocacy with processes such as credit transfer, reverse transfer and career exploration in collaboration with the Classroom to Career Hub. The COSI Navigator will track and monitor student progress and degree completion and assist with the program assessment and data collection for annual performance reporting, making recommendations for effective practices.
This is a position that works directly with a diverse student body and has the potential to make a positive impact on student lives. This position is grant funded through May 2026 with the goal of making the position permanent in the future.

(60%) Direct Services to Students
- Conduct recruitment outreach to a specific cohort of Colorado transfer and adult students who have stopped out for at least two semesters and who would benefit from the COSI FWYS scholarship program.
- Assist FWYS students in building and navigating their academic plans from admission through graduation, providing transfer and financial aid information, and making campus and community referrals as needed.
- Meet one-on-one with COSI Finish What You Started (FWYS) scholars to evaluate their educational progress and make appropriate recommendations and referrals; overseeing caseloads of 100 – 200 scholars.
- Engage in goal setting conversations with students, including financial wellness goals and helping students match their career interests to courses/programs of study, making referrals to Career to Classroom Hub as appropriate.
- Collaborate with MSU Denver departments to guide students through the enrollment process including admissions, advising and registration, and applying for financial aid.
- Meet with students withdrawing or stopping out of the institution. Work with each students to create plan for continued enrollment or future engagement when appropriate.
- Assist in COSI scholarship selection.
- Ensure students complete the FAFSA, CAFSA, COF, and/or scholarship applications. · Understand financial needs of scholars and work with financial aid to reduce amount of loans borrowed by students.
- Develop regular communication system for caseload interaction.
- Provide holistic support by meeting with students semesterly to review their educational progress and make appropriate recommendations and referrals to ensure degree progress and completion as well as career readiness.
- Identify key risk and success factors that may indicate a need for extra support such as GPA, stop-out concerns, probation, Early Alert, First Generation status, Access Center accommodations, etc.
(20%) Collaboration and Retention Programming
- Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Center for Individualized Learning on college completion initiatives for re-admits.
- Liaison with departments and offices to provide comprehensive advising and coaching support for students.
- Participate in University-wide enrollment and retention efforts (calling campaigns, registration events, Orientation etc.)
- Develop retention programming and activities to support success of COSI FWYS scholars including, but not limited to: financial literacy, academic success, career preparation, and goal setting.
(10%) Data and Technology
- Utilize Advising Systems tools and other technological platforms (SSC Navigate, Banner, Symplicity, etc.) to support advising and coaching functions.
- Track and report on individual student appointments.
- Utilize Early Alert data to support identified students.
- Utilize technology to advance best practices in advising.
- Document outreach efforts and use advising systems to maintain current data.
- Create and provide reports as requested.
- Execute assessments such as scholar satisfaction surveys and exit surveys.
(10%) Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned
- Remain current with regard to trends and developments in higher education and high-impact practices related to advising and student support through self-directed professional reading, the development of professional contacts with colleagues attendance at professional development courses/conferences, and trainings as directed by the Supervisor
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Program Manager of the Transfer and Adult Student Success Center, including but not limited to service on various University committees/taskforces related to student retention and academic support issues and/or event planning
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Previous experience with advising, counseling, or coaching diverse student populations
- Previous experience utilizing and knowledge of: admissions and transfer processes, general advising practices, student and academic affairs resources, and/or financial aid processes.

- Master’s Degree
- Experience working with a diverse student body (including, but not limited to: working adults, women, persons with disabilities, active duty/veteran military personnel, students with multiple and varying ethnic, racial and national backgrounds, etc.) to increase student retention and completion
- Experience working in a student retention program
- Experience utilizing and knowledge of pro-active (intrusive) advising techniques, student retention theories, and financial aid processes.
- Experience with effective cross-campus collaboration
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaker
