COMPENSATION :
The current minimum salary is $ 27.885576 per hour for a 40-hour week increasing to
39.836537 per hour in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change as per the Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation (S.M.A.R.T) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The benefits of this position include, but are not limited to, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and a comprehensive medical plan and pension plan.
Current rate has been established by the Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation (S.M.A.R.T) Union and is non-negotiable.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
The Locomotive Engineer Training Program prepares candidates for the position of Locomotive Engineer, the person responsible for the safe movement of trains and passengers under all operating conditions. A Locomotive Engineer must be knowledgeable in all operating rules, special instructions, physical characteristics of the entire railroad, air brake and equipment of all types of locomotives to include both diesel and multiple unit (electric), and competent at road troubleshooting of all equipment. An Engineer must be able to safely operate diesel and multiple unit trains.
The Locomotive Engineer Training Program, with its emphasis on rules, physical characteristics, mechanical operations, and train handling, is one of the most demanding and rewarding programs offered by the Railway. Candidates must qualify in all aspects of the job title (Passenger Service, Switching Crew, Work Trains).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Must have a valid high school diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of full- time satisfactory work experience related to customer service. (1 year of college can be substituted for up to 1 year of work experience)
- Valid driver's license
- A successful candidate must have the ability to understand and speak English over radio communications.
- Have an ability to remember information, such as words, numbers, pictures, and
procedures.
In addition, candidates are required to pass respective examinations related to their craft, including but not limited to : Roadway Worker Protection (RWP), Book of Rules, Conductor exams etc. Failure to pass any examination may result in termination.

All selected candidates will be subject to physical examination, drug and alcohol screening and a full background investigation that includes (but is not limited to) employment and education. Discrepancies may lead to termination of the hiring process and future dismissal from employment.
