Summary
The Technical Writer Level 1 writes technical and project documents, specifications, reports, memos, manuals, guides, and policies for complex subjects within MTA Construction & Development. They include researching topics, writing documents, and editing their work for publication. This position is responsible for generating innovative ideas for content while working independently and collaboratively as part of a team. The position researches technical subjects, capital projects, technology, products, services, or concepts to be documented and easily understood by a broad audience. The incumbent has familiarity with topic-based writing and structured content in line with organization goals while possessing strong skills in selecting the appropriate medium for the target audience. The incumbent has an aptitude for communicating technical subject matter relevant to capital project development and delivery, engineering, and architecture.
Responsibilities
Determines the most straightforward and logical way to present information.
Generates innovative ideas for content and workflow solutions.
Meets with subject-matter experts to ensure technical topics are appropriately addressed.
Analyzes information required for developing or updating project documents, technical content, policies, procedures, and other documentation.
Reviews and/or copyedits content developed by others.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication, Business Administration, Technical Writing, Computer Science, Engineering, Architecture, other relevant technical disciplines, or a related field.
Must have a minimum of three (3) years of related experience.
Master’s degree in a related field or one of the disciplines listed above.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Ability to quickly grasp, clarify, and document complex technical subject matter.
Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to take on new challenges and build on current skills.
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills.
Ability to multi-task and be a self-starter.
Ability to review and edit all technical material for consistency and accuracy.
Proficiency in technical and office software.
Other Information
As an MTA Construction & Development employee, you may be required to complete the New York State financial disclosure statement – annually if your position earns $105,472 (this figure is subject to change) per year if the position is designated as a policymaker.
