Job Description: The School Bus and CDL Trainer is responsible for providing comprehensive training to prospective and current drivers, ensuring they meet all local, state, and federal requirements for operating school buses and commercial vehicles. This role involves delivering high-quality instruction in classroom and behind-the-wheel settings, fostering a culture of safety and professionalism, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The Trainer will work closely with the Safety, Operations, and Human Resources teams to support the development and retention of qualified drivers. various activities (e.g. meetings, training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- One-on-one or group Instruction: Develop and deliver one-on-one or group training sessions on driving regulations, safety protocols, and company policies to prepare trainees for written CDL exams and practical driving tests. This includes videos and skills training.
- Behind-the-Wheel Training: Provide hands-on training to trainees in school buses and other commercial vehicles, focusing on vehicle operation, maneuvering, defensive driving, and emergency procedures.
- Evaluation and Certification: Assess trainees’ progress through written tests, driving evaluations, and practice sessions, and recommend candidates for certification upon successful completion.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all training materials and methods comply with Department of Transportation (DOT), state, and federal requirements for CDL and school bus operations.
- Driver Recertification: Conduct periodic retraining sessions for current drivers, including post-accident reviews, annual evaluations, and refresher courses, to ensure continued compliance with safety standards and company policies. Perform fieldwork as needed, including following and observing drivers on the road, verifying adherence to safety practices, and ensuring vehicles are equipped with the proper tools, supplies, and equipment.
- Safety Focus: Emphasize safety as a core value in all training activities and educate trainees on proper pre-trip and post-trip inspection procedures.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate training records, certification statuses, and attendance logs for all trainees and current drivers.
- Collaboration: Work with Safety, Operations, and HR teams to identify training needs, schedule sessions, and support driver development.
- Vehicle Familiarity: Provide training on various vehicle types, including standard and specialized buses, ensuring drivers are comfortable operating different models.
- Behavior Management Training: Educate drivers on effective behavior management strategies for dealing with students during transportation.
- Feedback and Improvement: Provide constructive feedback to trainees, identify areas for improvement, and develop tailored training plans as needed.
- Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support the transportation department’s goals and initiatives.
Qualifications
- Valid CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a school bus driver.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience training CDL drivers.
- Certified Trainer status or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
- Strong knowledge of DOT, state, and federal transportation regulations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills.
- Ability to work with diverse groups and tailor training to various learning styles.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
- Flexibility to work varying hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed.
Work Schedule
Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM with flexibility for some weekend work, as needed
This is a full-time position, typically requiring 40 hours per week. However, during school closures, seasonal slow periods, or other unforeseen circumstances, weekly hours may temporarily reduce to approximately 30 hours. The role is designed to maintain full-time hours under normal operating conditions.
