Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents:

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2025/2026 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Candidates are required to submit the Online Internship Application, cover letter, resume and letter of recommendation through MWRD's Online Employment Center.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking an intern in the Monitoring and Research Department.This internship is focused on water quality monitoring. The intern will work alongside staff and assist with collecting environmental samples, including water, sediment, and fish. The intern will also assist with the preparation and maintenance of monitoring equipment including sample gear, handheld meters, and water quality sondes. The intern will gain knowledge and skills on proper sampling and processing techniques and the identification of fish species for evaluating fish populations and diversity in the Chicago area waterways. The intern will also gain knowledge on the types of equipment used for monitoring the water quality of surface waters.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Ability to lift over 10 pounds in a long-handled fish net, and lift and carry a 3-gallon bucket of water for 30 yards.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and be able to work on a boat or in wadable streams.
  • Previous experience with basic environmental sampling and some fish identification is preferred but not required.

Educational Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program majoring in biology or environmental science.
  • Possess two years of college experience.
  • Completed Biology 101 and other coursework related to environmental science.
