What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard (Seasonal: Summer) position at Metropolitan YMCAs of MS?
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement following YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
2. Know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergencies immediately. Completes related reports as required.
3. Maintain effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
4. Positively communicate information to members and other YMCA programs.
5. Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
6. Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
7. Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA.
8. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
9. Complete the Pool Opening and Closing Checklist whenever on duty.
10. Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
11. Maintain cleanliness of the facility including pool, grounds, equipment/guard room, concessions and bathrooms.
12. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and report as well as rescue equipment.
13. Set up and store equipment for recreational swimming, group classes and pool parties.
14. Create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and professional alertness, courteous and always tactful.
15. Complete tasks listed during the assigned shift before checking off.
16. Keep the pool and pool area, deck and observation deck clean. Takes initiative and knows how, when and where to place the vacuum in the pool.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum age of 15.
2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
3. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate or equivalent.
4. Maintain annual certification with physical and mental readiness.
5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with American Red Cross standards.

Pay: From $10.00 per hour
Expected hours: 12 – 29 per week
