What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Director position at Metuchen-Edison YMCA?
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision and guidance of the Branch Director of Operations the Camp Director is responsible for the planning, organization, promotion, implementation, and supervision of the summer camp program and staff. Although primarily a seasonal position, pre-camp and post-camp season engagement is essential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work closely with the Branch Director of Operations in advance of the camp season to plan a robust, engaging, inclusive camp program, based on the community needs.
- Have a thorough understanding of camp policies and procedures including but not limited to the camp regulations, parent handbook, payment processes, child abuse prevent policies, safety policies.
- Work in conjunction with the Branch Director of Operations to maintain all state regulations.
- Ensure all health and safety standards are adhered to.
- Ensure all Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention policies are adhered to at all times, and any exceptions to the polices are immediately brought to the attention of leadership.
- In advance of and during camp season, actively participate in employee recruitment and training and coaching.
- Attend meetings and trainings as required.
- Review and approve daily schedules submitted by Unit Leaders, Counselors and others, making certain that activities are age appropriate and within the guiding principles of the YMCA Summer Camp philosophy.
- Work with Branch Director of Operations to schedule, supervise, and coach camp staff appropriately.
- Conduct staff meetings and trainings, documenting same and submitting minutes to Branch Director of Operations and Human Resources.
- Take an active role in camp training event.
- Keep adequate inventory of supplies, assist with ordering supplies needed within camp budget to keep supply inventory up to date.
- On a daily basis monitor and maintain equipment for safety.
- Maintain the first aid book and accident reports, forwarding all accident reports according to the process in place to the YMCA Corporate Office.
- Maintain positive relationships with parents in a manner that reflects a “Family Friendly” YMCA, greeting parents, children and guests professionally.
- Be available for parents and campers concerns, ensuring a professional and positive manner is exhibited and engaging the Branch Director of Operations if need be.
- Embrace and incorporate established house rules and areas of focus in all leadership and supervisory responsibilities.
- Open and close camp safely and within the policies and procedures established.
- All other duties as assigned by Branch Director of Operations or YMCA Leadership staff.

REQUIREMENTS:
- College Degree in a child related or managerial area or experience and education equivalent.
- Previous experience leading a camp or ASC program.
- Mature, positive, enthusiastic personality with an ability to work and lead large teams.
- Ability to communicate to a diverse population.
- Strong, proven background in child development, child care, community work, or youth serving areas.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Leadership ability and experience.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
PHYSICAL REQURIEMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal amounts of walking, standing, sitting, running, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, entering and exiting swim pools, ability to tolerate outside summer weather and conditions, ability to travel by bus to and from YMCA designated trip locations.
