MFAH Object Based Learning Fellowship

Fellowship Overview:

The Object-Based Learning Fellowship at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) offers an engaging and immersive experience in object-based learning (OBL) pedagogy. This fellowship provides an opportunity to work closely with the Learning and Interpretation team on interdisciplinary projects that bridge museum resources with educational practice, focusing on innovative approaches to teaching through art. The fellowship encompasses the following key initiatives: 

Neighborhood Arts Collaborative (NAC)

  • Assist in creating family guides to engage families in art exploration within their community.
  • Provide support for NAC summer camps in partnership with the Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) and S.H.A.P.E. Community Center.
  • Participate in MFAH Summer Internship Program enrichment and professional development opportunities.

Learning Through Art Interdisciplinary Curriculum for K–12 Teachers

  • Support content development for the Neighborhood Arts Collaborative (NAC) Teacher Fellowship.
  • Upload and input curriculum materials into the Learning Through Art website.
  • Collaborate with the OBL team to research and design teacher programs and marketing strategies for the curriculum’s fall 2025 launch.
  • Assist in developing Collection Connection resources for teachers aligned with fall exhibitions.
  • Conduct in-depth research on MFAH permanent collection objects for the Learning Through Art curriculum.

Learning Goals and Objectives:

Content Development and Research

  • Develop research skills by synthesizing information on MFAH objects to create curriculum and interpretive content.
  • Evaluate works of art critically to craft accessible resources for K–12 educators, such as “Connecting to the Work of Art” and “Conversation Starters” content.

Curriculum Design and Implementation

  • Apply interdisciplinary learning strategies to create OBL materials for classroom integration.
  • Utilize digital tools to ensure user-friendly website navigation and content accessibility.

Program Development and Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate on teacher program structures and marketing strategies for curriculum initiatives.
  • Develop Collection Connection resources aligning with upcoming exhibitions.

Hands-On Gallery Resource Design

  • Assist in designing interactive resources for docents and educators to enhance visitor experiences.
  • Create tools for engagement that focus on accessibility and visitor-centered approaches.

Community Engagement and Program Support

  • Support the NAC by co-creating family guides, contributing to summer camps, and engaging with community partners like EPC and S.H.A.P.E. Community Center.
  • Gain experience in planning and facilitating educational programs.

Professional Development and Critical Reflection

  • Participate in lectures, workshops, and collaborative sessions focused on museum education practices.
  • Reflect on how OBL supports diverse audiences and equitable cultural access.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Strengthen communication skills through content creation, staff collaboration, and participation in enrichment activities.
  • Work effectively in interdisciplinary teams to meet program goals and align resources with institutional priorities.

Evaluation and Feedback Integration

  • Provide input on programming and pilot educational resources, incorporating feedback for refinement.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong computer, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Dependable and punctual

Education and Eligibility:

Graduate-level: Open to students currently enrolled in a graduate program or who have recently completed (within one year) a master’s degree.

Anticipated Schedule:

The fellowship will comprise 350 hours of work (35 hours per week for 10 weeks), running from June 2 to August 8, 2025. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with an hour-long lunch). Fall hours to be determined dependent on position needs and the selected applicant’s availability.

Fellowship Rate:

$17/Hour
