Position Summary: The Transmission Service Technician II plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of transmissions used in high-horsepower frac pump units. This mid-level role focuses on the repair, rebuild, and testing of complex mechanical and hydraulic transmissions such as Allison, Twin Disc, and similar systems. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Key Roles / Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, disassemble, inspect, and repair transmissions and related components on frac pump equipment.
- Rebuild transmissions (Allison, Twin Disc, CAT, etc.) to OEM specifications.
- Use diagnostic tools and test stands to ensure all repaired units perform to operational standards.
- Follow proper torque specs, cleanliness standards, and documentation requirements during rebuilds.
- Collaborate with parts, engineering, and quality teams to ensure builds meet customer and field-use standards.
- Maintain accurate service logs and document parts used, labor hours, and repair notes.
- Identify failure trends and suggest process or design improvements.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
- Assist with mentoring and training Transmission Technician I roles.
- Adhere to all company safety protocols and PPE requirements.
Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working on heavy-duty transmissions, preferably in oilfield or industrial applications.
- Proficient with mechanical hand tools, precision measurement tools, and hydraulic testing equipment.
- Working knowledge of Allison, Twin Disc, or equivalent transmission systems.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and service manuals.
- Preferred:
- Technical/vocational certification in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment.
- Experience with frac pump power end and transmission integration.
- Prior work in a frac pump service or manufacturing environment.
Working Conditions:
- Bending, lifting, climbing, pushing, pulling, kneeling, sitting stand, walk, kneel, stoop, squat, pull, push, climb, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and see and standing (occasionally) for long periods of time.
- The essential duties of this position require moderate to heavy lifting and carrying.
- Must be able to position oneself to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels and demonstrate manual dexterity and be able to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels, vibrations, and bright lights; and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases; and all climate types including hot and cold temperatures, humidity, rain, snow, etc.
- Able to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection and hard hats when needed.
- React quickly using hands, fingers, or feet.
- Must be able to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to complete tasks even with frequent interruptions.
- Must be able to use discretion and independent judgment as needed.
- Must be able to speak clearly on the phone and to fellow workers.
