Miami Country Day School seeks an Upper School Ceramics Teacher, to begin August 2025, who will be responsible for instructing and inspiring 9th-12th grade students in the art of ceramics while fostering a creative and engaging learning environment. The ideal candidate will possess both technical expertise in ceramics and a passion for education, supporting students in developing their artistic skills and appreciation for the art form.
JOB SUMMARY:
In collaboration with the Arts Department, lead the design and implementation of the ceramics program using the Understanding by Design framework. The position involves teaching five sections of ceramics along with serving as an academic advisor to a group of 10 upper school students. This person will also be an enthusiastic participant in the Arts Department initiatives and Upper School community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TASKS:

Design and deliver comprehensive ceramics curricula, including sculpture, hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing, and kiln operations.

Facilitate a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and artistic growth.

Provide individualized feedback and guidance to students to support their artistic development.

Document and maintain student work for portfolios, exhibits, and assessments.

Manage multiple student levels working in an art studio environment.

Supervise and maintain the ceramics studio, including tools, equipment, and supplies.

Demonstrate proper safety procedures for all studio activities and ensure compliance with safety protocols.

Assist with the planning and execution of art exhibitions, showcases, and department events.

Encourage student participation in local, regional, and national art competitions and exhibits.

Collaborate with the Arts Department on curricular design, interdisciplinary projects and school-wide events.

Manage studio inventory and order necessary supplies within budgetary guidelines.

Participate in department, school, and parent meetings.

Engage in continual professional growth and to be a member of a dynamic community of learners.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

BFA or BA degree required in Art Education; Master’s degree preferred.

Proven expertise in ceramics techniques, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, glazing, and kiln operation.

Teaching experience in an independent school preferred but not required.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
