Water & Sewer Department Director

POSITION OVERVIEW: This is a professional position of service to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida (“Tribe”) requiring a professional with specialized knowledge in operating and maintaining a Water Treatment plant. The Water & Sewer Director is responsible for overseeing all daily operations of the Water & Sewer Department to include but not limited to overseeing department staff, community water production, distribution, maintenance, water testing, and operating the water treatment utility according to the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act. This position requires advanced skills and considerable independent judgment and discretion in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining the best results.

The incumbent must be dedicated to serve the needs, interests, and people of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, and must be diligent to protect and assert Tribal sovereignty.

The incumbent may be assigned other duties, as is deemed necessary and required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: 

• Bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering, environmental sciences, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred
• 5 years of senior management experience in roles such as Chief Operator, Superintendent, or Maintenance Chief in an advanced water treatment plant required 
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Special Qualifications:

• Extensive knowledge with water quality regulations, leadership, and personnel management required.
• An active State of Florida Class “B” Water Treatment Operator’s license. Applicants who do not currently possess a valid license must acquire the State of Florida Class “B” Water Treatment Operator’s license within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

• Ensure that all EPA and Health Department sampling is completed correctly and that all standards of the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act are being met
• Knowledge of computers and applications used to create, store, and evaluate systems performance information such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to lead and supervise others, provide clear instructions to subordinate employees, delegate responsibilities, and enforce standards of behavior and performance 
• Ability to inspect, read, interpret, and direct the troubleshooting of machinery, gages, pumps, meters, charts and other control instruments
• Ability to detect flaws and defects in operations and correct them.
• Ability to maintain complete and accurate records, make responsible decisions, and exercise proper judgment 
• Ability to demonstrate effective writing and communication skills and the ability to effectively work with the general public.
• Ability to effectively represent the Tribe in communications with the community, general public, EPA, IHS, and employees.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, Council members, outside agencies as needed, and the community.
• Oversee and assist as need with all equipment and vehicle repairs and maintenance
• Possess a valid Florida driver’s license upon hire, and must be retained throughout the duration of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

• Have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds) as needed 
• Must be able to work outdoors in the South Florida climate that includes extreme heat, humidity, UV exposure, and weather that may include heavy rain 
• Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time; walking and moving from one work site to another
• The incumbent will encounter wildlife, including: large mammals/reptiles, stinging/biting insects, and noxious plants.
