Groundskeeper

Overview

Responsible for leading the grounds and cemetery personnel at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park (YVMP) and other cemetery operations, including ground maintenance, internment operations, cemetery record keeping, equipment maintenance, repairs, and improvements.

Job Responsibilities

• In the absence of the Cemetery Manager, responsible for overseeing the cemetery grounds to meet YVMP initiatives. Responsible for maintaining a project list and communicating the status of projects with management on a weekly basis.
• Exercise initiative and independent judgment and ensures work is performed promptly, with frequent reviews and adjustments for priority changes.
• Develop and implement long-and short-term plans to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of cemetery operations.
• Requires daily contact with families, funeral directors, contractors, and other state agencies that require tactful and professional communication and interaction.
• Perform all-season ground maintenance (e.g., mowing and trimming, essential equipment and facility repairs and maintenance, snow removal, etc.).
• Set concrete pads and assist vendors with marker placement.
• Perform minor repair and maintenance on equipment (i.e., checking fluids, changing parts, etc.).
• Maintain accurate records of all equipment, manuals, and serial numbers.
• May work on the weekend and after-hours as necessary for Interment Services, scheduled maintenance, and community events.
• Maintain planter beds and/or landscape areas (trimming hedges, installing new plant material, and placing pre-emergent and bark to help prevent weeds).
• Manage the water irrigation system, which includes maintaining the sprinkler controller, heads, valves, central lines, and all necessary repairs/maintenance.
• Adhere to all professional, municipal, state/provincial and federal licensing and/or authority regulations.
• Must be familiar and adhere to all Laws and Regulations regarding pesticide handling and application, or any chemicals.
• Promote a safe work environment be being aware of and practicing universal precautions and adopting general principles of safe conduct.
• May assist in developing new cemetery sections, including the layout of interment spaces and lot markers.
• Ensure confidentiality of all cases and families we serve.
• May be required to perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Oversee Interment Services:

• Locate correct interment site (via pins) and cut sod, operate backhoe to excavate dirt from interment site, and set up casket lowering devices. This also includes the setup of chairs, flowers/plants, tent, vault lid, etc. prior to the service.
• At the conclusion of the service, you are responsible for lowering the casket/burial container, refilling grave with dirt and sod, and continuing to monitor the site to ensure grass regrows properly.

Requirements

• Previous experience in landscape maintenance or groundskeeping is preferred but not mandatory.
• Familiarity with hand tools and power tools used in gardening and landscaping tasks.
• Basic knowledge of lawn care techniques, including mowing, fertilization, and pest control.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining a positive attitude.
• Strong attention to detail with an eye for aesthetics in landscape design.
• Physical stamina to perform manual labor tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
• A valid driver's license

Pay: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
