TITLE: H.H. Dow High School Athletic Director/Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO: H.H. Dow High School Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary range 10at: $100,945 – $118,759, 50 weeks per year position-full time. Hours during summer and school breaks may vary, as determined by District administration.

START DATE: This position is expected to begin as early as June 1, 2025 and no later than July 1, 2025

POSITION SUMMARY

Midland Public Schools is seeking an innovative, transformative, progressive, and collaborative leader to serve as the Athletic Director/Assistant Principal at H.H. Dow High School. This position reports to the Principal of H.H. Dow High School and is responsible for all aspects of athletic programming, coach and athlete development, and administrative tasks as assigned by the building principal. The Athletic Director/Assistant Principal will work collaboratively to support the district vision: Lead with respect, trust, and courage. Ensure an equitable, collaborative, and inclusive culture. Enable all to achieve success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or similar
  • Must meet or be willing to meet the State School Administrator’s continuing education requirements
  • Knowledge of current education research and best practices
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, communications, and team building
  • Successful experiences in leadership roles with knowledge of school law and legal requirements of schools
  • Proficient using data to inform decisions
  • Ability to establish and maintain good public reactions and communication with students,
  • parents, and members of the community while maintaining a calm and professional image
  • Able to work an irregular schedule

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced education degree (beyond Master’s degree)
  • Evidence of successful experience as a school administrator
  • Evidence of successful experience as a teacher and instructional leadership roles
  • Evidence of successful experience as a coach and athletic leadership roles
  • State of Michigan teacher certification
  • Experience with school-based leadership, including development, implementation, and monitoring of programs and budgets
  • Advanced level computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other computer skills
  • Knowledge of and experience dealing with student disciplinary issues, school safety, and various student services-related matters

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Assistant Principal

  • Act as a support to the building principal: support the development of teaching and learning, coordinate curriculum in collaboration with district staff, and provide instructional support as requested by the principal
  • Address and document student behavior issues promptly and effectively, utilizing restorative practices when appropriate
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, support staff, and parents to provide interventions and supports for students experiencing academic behavioral, or social-emotional challenges
  • Manage student attendance and truancy, working with families and community partners to address attendance barriers
  • Act as a mentor, coach, and evaluator for the teaching and support staff assigned to the building
  • Collaborate as an administrative team member around other district-level initiatives for students and staff
  • Other administrative duties as assigned by the Principal or District

Athletic Director

  • Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance and sportsmanship to staff and student-athletes; recognize excellence and achievement.
  • Articulate the school’s and athletic department’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Ensure exceptional game/event management to elevate the experience of student athletes and spectators
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  • Ensure the effective resolution of conflicts.
  • Ensure compliance within the department on all applicable District and MHSAA policies
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to interview, select, and orient new coaches.
  • Make recommendations to the superintendent team on termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees within the department.
  • Define expectations for coach/staff performance regarding strategies, management, and communication with the public.
  • Observe coach/staff performance, conduct observations, and facilitate evaluation conferences utilizing District evaluation systems.
  • Develop the athletic department’s budget based on documented program needs, estimated participation, personnel, and other fiscal needs; keep programs within budget limits; maintain fiscal control; accurately report fiscal information.
  • Collaborate with Operations to manage the use of school facilities and supervise the maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus.

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff assigned to campus including teacher(s), coaches, paraprofessional(s), administrative assistant(s), etc.

  • Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate district-wide curriculum functions; interpret policy, procedures, and data.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer terminal possible; occasional district-wide travel; occasional state-wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; possible biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
