Braillist / Para-Educator
Job Summary:
The Braillist / Para-Educator is responsible for assisting certificated staff, licensed orientation and mobility specialist, VITC (Visually Impaired Teacher Consultant), licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists and other ancillary staff in the support of instructional, health-related, recreational and prevocational/job training activities in the assigned area of responsibility for students with disabilities. The para-educator may be assigned to one classroom or as a one-on-one assistant to a student or to a variety of assignments depending on the needs of students. Para-educators can perform one or more of these functions as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
- Provides program support in instructional and related activities for students with visual impairment under the direction of certificated, licensed and ancillary staff.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn braille.
- Keyboarding and computer skills.
- Provides one-on-one assistance to students in use of adaptive equipment.
- Participates in Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings when requested.
- Assists with the implementation of instructional activities based on student goals and objectives as written in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Provides input to behavior intervention plan meetings and/or other meetings with staff and/or parents for the development of individualized behavior intervention plans for students in the assigned area, as requested.
- Implements established procedures and interventions in accordance with individualized behavior intervention plans and district policies/guidelines.
- Loads and unloads students from school buses/vehicles under the direction of certificated, licensed and ancillary staff.
- Assists with the lifting and movement of students as needed.
- Assists with meals, play, recreational and other activities, as required, in the assigned area of responsibility.
Essential Duties (Continued):
- Participates in staff meetings, in-service/staff development activities, training and school improvement team activities.
- Serves as an instructional team member and performs student health care services in accordance with direct administrative guidelines.
- Assists in the collection of data to support programs and services provided to students with disabilities.
- Consistently models Win-Win leadership.
Other Duties:
- Uses technology to communicate with staff and students.
- Assists in duplication of materials and other material preparation activities in the assigned area of responsibility.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Sixty (60) semester hours college credits if experience qualification below is not met. Coursework in child development, education, psychology, social work or field related to special education preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of two years (1,920 hours) of successful, documented work experience providing direct care services/instructional support for persons with special needs required if education requirement above is not met. Work experience in a child care or educational program preferred. Work experience with children or adults in a group home or foster care facility specializing as a caregiver for residents with special needs may also be considered. Experience with students with visual impairment, cognitive impairment, severe multiple impairment, autism spectrum disorders, emotional impairment, relevant to the vacancy as posted, preferred.
Skills/Other:
Must meet State of Michigan Department of Human Services Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry Clearance as applicable. Ability to accept supervision and direction, work creatively and skillfully with students and to effectively communicate with students. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Exhibit dependability and present a professional self-image. Communicate professionally, effectively and in a timely fashion. Interact positively with parents, caregivers and team members.
Skills/Other (Continued):
Cooperate with other staff. Follow district health and safety procedures. Demonstrate physical stamina necessary for lifting and moving students up to 26 years of age; repetitive stooping, squatting, bending, lifting, walking, kneeling and reaching while maintaining personal balance and stability; implement established behavior improvement intervention plans and perform the essential job duties. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Exhibit emotional stability, exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and established administrative guidelines. Ability to work a flexible workday, work week and work year. Represents the intermediate school district in a professional manner at all times. Works successfully as a member of the team.
