Deaf-Blind Intervener Job Posting
POSITION SUMMARY:
The intervener works with students that have both a hearing loss and vision loss (to some degree) to help the student gather information, develop and use communication skills, establish relationships and increase independence. The intervener will also assist the teacher(s) with other teaching/learning activities, hygiene and work with teacher(s) as a member of an instructional team.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates access to the environmental information that is usually gained through vision and hearing, but
which is unavailable or incomplete to the student who is DeafBlind
- Facilitates the development and/or use of the student’s receptive and expressive communication skills based on student need (including American Sign Language, ProTactile, Sighted Guide)
- Develops and maintains a trusting, interactive relationship with the student who is DeafBlind that
promotes social and emotional development and wellbeing (Alsop et al., 2002)
- Provide whatever assistance may be needed to assure that the unique needs of the DeafBlind student are met
- Utilize instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials and techniques that meet the individual
educational needs of the DeafBlind student
- Assist the teacher(s) by working with students on individual and/or small group instructional activities when DeafBlind student is involved
- Participate, as required, as part of an IEP team in planning educational programs for students
- Attend all required workshops and in-services
- Demonstrate a positive attitude in working with the student, parent, other staff members and community
members
- To maintain confidentiality with respect to student, parent and staff information
- To ensure a safe environment for students at all times
- Must be willing to receive additional training to improve job skills
- To meet and greet visitors in a positive and helpful manner
- To implement and maintain daily lesson plans as developed by the teacher
- Provide support for the student during assessments to ensure accessibility
- Follow DeafBlind Intervener’s Code of Ethics
- Other duties may be assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- National Intervener Credential (or willingness to earn credential) required.
- Experience and training in Sign Language preferred.
Compensation:
Federation of Paraeducators $16.00 – $23.25 depending on experience and qualifications.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Frequent travel and/or driving to various off-site locations is required. Noise levels are typically low to moderate.
