South Lake Schools is located on Lake St. Clair in St. Clair Shores only 20 minutes from the diverse attractions of Detroit and 35 minutes from cider and doughnuts at one of many local apple orchards.
Job Summary/ Goal: The Dean of Students assists the building principal in providing school wide leadership; helps ensure a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment; and effectively collaborates and communicates with students, parents, teachers, and community.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with course work in education and/or educational administration
- At least three (3) years secondary experience working with students and staff
- Valid teaching certificate issued by the Michigan Department of Education (preferred)
- Valid Michigan Administrator’s certificate (preferred)
- Must be able to meet or exceed the Michigan Department of Education’s “Michigan Code of Educational Ethics”
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent (or designee) may find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop a culture of collegial and professional relationships among staff and students that promote critical reflection, shared accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Enforce school policies, investigate student behavior issues, conduct disciplinary hearings, and implement appropriate consequences per the Student Code of Conduct.
- Provide academic advising, crisis intervention, mental health referrals, and support services to students facing personal challenges.
- Track student data, analyze trends, and prepare reports on student behavior, attendance, and welfare.
- Monitor student attendance, address absenteeism issues, and follow up with students regarding absences.
- Administer and model restorative practice strategies in collaboration with the mental health and restorative practice support staff.
- Assist in the planning and execution of new student orientation programs.
- Oversee student organizations, coordinate events, and promote student engagement in campus life.
- Assist in the maintenance of the official school calendar and supervision of activities and events (before, during, and after school).
- Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
- Participate as needed in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, 504 Plan meetings, Student Study Teams, and Threat Assessments.
- Participate in the recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new faculty and staff.
- Supervise designated support staff and assign duties as appropriate to meet school objectives.
- Administer and implement building safety and security procedures and policies.
- Respond to emergencies and critical situations on campus, providing immediate support and coordinating necessary actions.
- Act as the liaison between the Principal’s office and all departments and organizations within the school, as assigned by the Principal.
- Participate in informal classroom visitations/observations and provide recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.
- Participate in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Employee shall properly implement Board Policy 3122, Policy 4122, and Policy 2260 on non-discrimination and shall comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, particularly Part 1 104 of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (34 CFR) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Terms of Employment : 190 days while following the teacher calendar
Base Salary Range: $74,345 – $80,061
ADA Requirements : Middle school building environment, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending and sports arena environments; extensive action with students, staff and parents, research incidents; first aid/CPR.
