Elementary Student Support Specialist
Position Title: Elementary Student Support Specialist
Location: Orchard View Schools: Cardinal Elementary
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Overview:
The Elementary Student Support Services Specialist will be a vital member of the student services team, supporting the school’s efforts to implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) focused on behavior and social-emotional prevention and intervention. This role will work across all tiers of support to promote positive student outcomes, providing direct services to students, collaborating with teachers and staff, and ensuring the effective delivery of all tiers of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and behavior management strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- MTSS Behavior & Social-Emotional Support:
- Implement and monitor Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions focused on social-emotional development, behavior prevention and intervention strategies..
- Provide individual and small group counseling to students in need of targeted or intensive interventions.
- Monitor student progress, adjust interventions as necessary, and provide regular updates to staff and families on progress.
- Tier 1 Teacher Support – SEL and Behavior:
- Support teachers in implementing classroom-wide SEL programs, strategies, and practices to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Provide professional development and coaching for teachers on behavior management, SEL integration, and creating classroom environments that support social-emotional growth.
- Assist teachers in designing classroom interventions and strategies that support students who are at-risk for behavioral and emotional difficulties.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement universal supports and tiered interventions that benefit all students, including those requiring additional support.
- Individual Student Support Team Member:
- 504 team to support students with disabilities, ensuring they have access to appropriate accommodations
- Functional Behavior Assessment and Positive Behavior Support Plans student team.
- Student Behavior Threat Assessment Team/Individual Student Crisis Response Support individual student teams with other supports as needed.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and other school staff to identify students needing additional support and ensure effective delivery of services.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, interventions, and strategies for supporting behavior and social-emotional development.
- Work with the MTSS team to assess the effectiveness of interventions, analyze data, and make adjustments to the tiered support system as needed.
- Other Duties:
- Support the school’s broader goals of creating an inclusive, supportive, and positive learning environment providing a sense of belonging for all students.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- A Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a related field is required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in an educational setting, preferably in an elementary school environment.
- Experience in implementing MTSS frameworks, social-emotional learning programs, and behavioral interventions.
- Experience working with students with disabilities and familiarity with the 504 process.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of MTSS and its application in addressing behavior and social-emotional needs.
- Proven ability to design and implement individualized and group interventions for behavior and social-emotional learning.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, parents, and students.
- Ability to analyze data and use it to inform decisions and adjust interventions.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Certifications:
Valid state certification or licensure in Social Work, or Counseling or working towards a degree and capable of securing emergency certification in the State of Michigan.
