Job Summary
The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC2) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Area Specialist in the field of materials characterization. This is a full-time position responsible for providing technical and scientific support to faculty, researchers, and students in the MC2.

Responsibilities*
- Lead the materials surface characterization research area, including oversight of daily operations, maintenance of equipment, and training of users
- Provide consultation, training, and technical support to researchers on the use of SEM, AFM, nanoindentation, and in situ mechanical testing in SEM for materials characterization, as well as initial training for introductory FIB users
- Develop and implement new techniques and protocols to promote research in the field of materials science
- Collaborate with faculty and researchers to design and execute experiments and analyze data
- Communicate research findings through presentations and publications
Required Qualifications*
- PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field with a strong focus on surface analytics
- At least 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of SEM, AFM, and nanoindentation and in situ mechanical testing in SEM equipment and data analysis
- Proficiency in image processing and analysis software
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with researchers and students from varied backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with additional materials characterization techniques such as FIB and TEM, including in situ nanomechanics in TEM
