The Investigator is responsible for investigating violations of Michigan anti-cruelty laws and educating the public regarding proper animal care and compliance with state law.

Responsibilities:

  • Pick up and transport injured, sick, or aggressive animals to the shelter for medical attention.
  • Track, investigate, and follow up on allegations of animal cruelty.
  • Assist with removing animals from homes and write search/arrest warrants for violations of cruelty laws. Gather and document evidence to support cruelty cases and investigations.
  • Check emails and voicemails daily; return calls and respond to emails; document the information provided by the caller or person who send the email.
  • Prioritize and organize calls and complaints before going out into the field.
  • Spend time in the community investigating complaints and providing outreach and education to community members.
  • Instruct clients on how to provide better quality care for their pets. Serve as a resource if they need help caring for their pets in the future.
  • Participate as a member of the Animal Search and Rescue Team and Disaster Response Team.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other departments, animal welfare organizations, or law enforcement agencies as necessary.
  • Partner with the shelter teams to ensure the care of CID animals in our facilities.
  • Operate and be responsible for the cleanliness of a company vehicle.
  • Testify in court, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma (or equivalent)
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of related experience
  • Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI) training Levels I, II, and III or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must possess knowledge of safe animal handling techniques.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds; occasionally climb, jump, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Ability to determine a safe course of action to rescue an animal.
  • Ability to spend long periods in a vehicle and deal with unpredictable working conditions.
  • Possess a current drivers license and good driving record
  • Basic computer and software skills; use of phone, fax, and copier
