Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and demonstrate the ability to translate spoken language into sign language and vice versa. This role is crucial in ensuring that all participants can engage fully in conversations, meetings, and events.
Responsibilities
- Provide accurate interpretation of spoken language into American Sign Language and vice versa in various settings, including educational, medical, and community environments.
- Facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing individuals by interpreting dialogue in real-time.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while interpreting sensitive information.
- Adapt interpretation style to suit the context and needs of the participants, ensuring clarity and understanding.
- Collaborate with other interpreters or professionals as necessary to provide comprehensive communication support.
- Stay current with developments in ASL, linguistics, and interpreting practices to enhance skills and effectiveness.
Experience
- Proven experience as a Sign Language Interpreter is preferred; however, recent graduates with relevant training are encouraged to apply.
- Strong proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional languages are a plus (bilingual or multilingual candidates are highly valued).
- Knowledge of linguistics and the ability to translate complex concepts accurately is essential.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
