What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detroit Voting Rights Organizer position at Michigan League of Conservation Voters?
The Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF) — one of Michigan’s largest, most impactful political advocacy organizations tackling drinking water contamination, the rapidly-worsening impacts of climate change, and efforts to undermine our access to the ballot — is seeking a dynamic, temporary, full-time Detroit Voting Rights Organizer to educate, engage and mobilize voters to participate in the 2025 Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck municipal elections and beyond. They will engage voters and community partners to grow our volunteer base, register voters, educate on early voting options, and build collective strength in Southeast Michigan
The ideal candidate has a tenacious, self-starter attitude with experience in either political candidate campaigns, issue-based community organizing, or union worker organizing. They are an organizer at-heart, or have relevant experience that would set them up for success when communicating with volunteers in person, on the phone, or in virtual meetings. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and able to build genuine relationships with diverse constituencies. They are passionate about politics and the value of our vote, and want to be immersed in the high-speed world of it.
Job Responsibilities
The Detroit Voting Rights Organizer, a temporary position based in the Detroit metro area that reports to the Voting Rights Coordinator, is responsible for the following:
Conduct daily, measurable field work throughout Detroit and other targeted areas
- Help lead a team of canvassers, engaging voters at high-traffic locations (e.g., transit stops, community events, grocery stores) to register, re-register, or pre-register them.
- Build and maintain active relationships with trusted local hubs like barber shops, churches, high schools, senior centers, and block clubs.
- Represent Michigan LCV at community events, building visibility and trust.
- Participate in all Michigan LCVEF’s issue-based work — doing the hard work of community organizing, which means phone banking, door-to-door field canvassing, text banking, relational organizing, and engagement events.
Lead relational organizing efforts using the Empower app
- Help community members reach their own networks through vote tripling, peer-to-peer texting, and family-and-friend pledge campaigns.
- Train Volunteer Leaders to engage voters in their neighborhoods on hyper-local issues.
Support early voting and GOTV efforts
- Participate in site-based canvassing at early vote locations; help coordinate and staff "Parties at the Polls" and a variety of early vote events featuring food, music, and giveaways in collaboration with local businesses and partners.
- Participate in poll monitoring and voter protection efforts to ensure access and fair treatment at the ballot box.
Collaborate on youth and civics engagement
- Help connect DFA’s civic education work to high school and college students by partnering with educators, youth organizations, and churches.
- Encourage students to pre-register, understand their rights, and engage in local government.
- Support the internship program by mentoring youth and integrating them into field activities.
Create visibility and share critical voter information
- Distribute printed election guides and digital resources in collaboration with the communications team.
- Support influencer-driven outreach by identifying local leaders who can serve as digital or real-world ambassadors.
- Keep a steady pulse on local voting rights issues, sharing that knowledge with staff and key partners, and using those issues and opportunities to engage citizens in Michigan LCVEF’s work
Track progress and share insights
- Submit accurate daily field reports and data logs.
- Elevate community concerns, voting access barriers, or misinformation trends to leadership.
Collaborate across departments
- Coordinate with Advocacy & Outreach to amplify campaigns around democracy and government transparency issues.
- Help integrate civic engagement into environmental justice work and vice versa.
