Job Summary

UMHHC Safety Management Services is seeking an ergonomics specialist to develop, implement, promote, and maintain ergonomic injury prevention programs and projects. The work involves conducting ergonomic assessments for a variety of work areas, including nursing, laboratory, warehouse, housekeeping, and general office, generating reports, developing and delivering training, and presenting results to managers.

NOTE: The successful candidate may be an entry to senior-level individual. Experience with clinical assessment of mobility needs of a wide variety of patient populations strongly preferred. Final job classification and compensation will be based on the combination of relevant educational qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain employee ergonomics programs for UMHHC.
  • Support the institutional Safe Patient Handling & Mobility (SPHM) program, including performing risk assessments and gap analyses, identifying interventions, design SPHM elements into the built clinical environment, conduct product evaluations, design and deliver equipment training, facilitate and participate in ongoing multidisciplinary program development and CQI activities.
  • Investigate injuries, address staff concerns, determine risk factors, recommend controls, and assist departments in implementing and maintaining corrective actions.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct ergonomics education and training programs.
  • Research and develop policies and procedures, standards, and design criteria affecting ergonomics.
  • Provide consultation services and product reviews.
  • Coordinate with related UMHHC and University of Michigan organizations.
  • Review design plans for construction and renovation of hospital facilities for ergonomic concerns.
  • Serve as an institutional resource on ergonomics topics.

Required Qualifications*

Both Titles

  • Satisfactory completion of an internship program is necessary.
  • Current Michigan Registration in Occupational Therapy and NBCOT membership is required.
  • Reasonable progressively responsible experience in Occupational Therapy is necessary.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification
  • Excellent knowledge of modern ergonomics principles and practices with emphasis on human factors.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and planning skills.
  • Ability to analyze patient population mobility needs and provide interventions to optimize patient outcomes, employee health, and safety.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint computer applications.


Occupational Therapist

< 3 Years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree

  • Occupational Therapist Clinical Specialist

    • 3 Years of experience
    • Master of Science or Doctor of Occupational Therapy
    • Some experience in teaching and continuing education in specialty area is necessary.
    • Some experience in supervision is necessary.


    Work Schedule

    M-F daytime hours, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm, with some flexibility allowed after completing the probationary period. Additional work hours are required during evenings, nights and weekends to respond to institutional needs.

    Modes of Work

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

    This is a hybrid position with up to 2 days/week remote depending on on-site needs.

    This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

    Background Screening

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
