Responsibilities*

To provide health care to patients and families with acute and/or chronic medical concerns within the Department of Family Medicine as a float PA providing coverage for out of office providers and additional access as needed by the department. This includes both adult and pediatric patients.

Patient Care

  • Provide Direct Patient Care and management of acute and chronic conditions for Family Medicine.
  • Perform detailed history and physical examinations and develop appropriate management plans.
  • Develop problem-based care plans, prepare orders and prescribe medications.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic labs, radiologic studies, ancillary testing.
  • Provide care related to mental health concerns and, when appropriate, refer to other health professionals.
  • Assist in the appropriate referral of patients to both internal and external resources, including emergency care.
  • Provide timely and effective communication of patient needs to internal and external care providers to ensure safe patient hand offs.
  • Collaborate with other health care providers/clinicians to coordinate clinical care.
  • Effectively communicate clinical information and follow up plans to patients.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation in compliance with UMHS policies and procedures.
  • Respond in a timely manner to nursing concerns/requests.
  • Provide and document patient and family education plans
  • Attend staff, care coordination and team meetings.
  • Complete regular peer review activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Work on continuous improvement in patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignments.
  • Provide coverage for E-Visits during administrative time.
  • Provide panel coverage for out of office providers including In Basket support.


Program Management

  • Serve on clinical committees as appropriate or assigned


Education and professional development

  • Participate in the education of health care professionals and students through mentoring, participating in in-services, seminars, and formal presentations.
  • Participate in professional activities that contribute to the advancement of the PA profession, such as professional associations and publications.
  • Develop one?s own clinical knowledge and skills through continuing education programs, course work and reading professional literature.
  • Participate in one?s own performance evaluation and establishment of plans for self-development and learning.


Professional standards

  • Abide by the standards of care and standards of practice established by Michigan Medicine.
  • Practice within the regulations of the Michigan Public Health Code.


Required Qualifications*

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification
  • At least 2 years of recent experience (within the last 5 years) as a Physician Assistant in the medical care/management of adult and pediatric patients, with extensive knowledge and application of evidence-based medicine in an ambulatory care or urgent care setting.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience providing a broad spectrum of medical health care including adult medicine, obstetrics and pediatrics in an outpatient setting.
  • Demonstrated partnership and leadership with members of the health care team in current chronic care initiatives as validated by performance evaluations and references.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete history and physical examinations; order appropriate diagnostic studies, synthesize information and make informed clinical decisions; develop appropriate care plans; and be responsive to patient and family preferences.
  • Demonstrates excellent teaching abilities.
  • Experience in working with patients and families with multiple chronic diseases and their self management.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment.
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated communication and customer service excellence with patients, family, staff and physicians.
  • The provider must demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate assertively as a patient advocate.
  • Demonstrated ability to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity.
  • Experience as participant in continuous quality improvement.
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to electronic medical record documentation and electronic order entry.
  • EPIC/MiChart experience a plus.
  • Ability to travel to different primary care sites where assigned.


Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 per week Monday-Friday with some evenings and Saturdays

Shift: Day shift

Location: Any ambulatory Family Medicine clinical site.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
