The Michigan Milk Producers Association is looking for an experienced Sanitation Manager position is responsible for all activities related to food sanitation in a dairy manufacturing and packaging environment.  This manager plays a pivotal role in establishing and documenting a formal, fully compliant sanitation program.  The Sanitation manager will be responsible for the sanitation programs in four plants in the MMPA network.

The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) – established in 1916 – is a dairy farmer-owned and operated milk marketing cooperative and dairy processor. As the 10th largest dairy cooperative in the U.S., MMPA serves dairy farmers throughout Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana, employing approximately 625 people in four states. In addition to a cheese plant in Indiana called the Middlebury Cheese Company, and a dairy product plant in Ohio called Superior Dairy, MMPA operates two SQF Level 3 dairy ingredient plants in Michigan. Products made at MMPA’s plants include fluid milk, cheese, ultra-filtered milk, ice cream, butter, nonfat dry milk, cream, and condensed skim milk.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedule and manage sanitation workers to ensure plant operations meet sanitation requirements for machinery, equipment, and facilities.
  • Train sanitation and plant employees to achieve and maintain sanitation objectives.
  • Build and maintain a Master Sanitation Schedule and related documentation.
  • Meet cleaning frequencies established in the Master Sanitation Schedule.
  • Make recommendations for improvements and lead improvement teams.
  • Work with the Plant Management and Director of Quality to troubleshoot issues
  • Explain hazards and safety measures to employees and monitor compliance.
  • Maintain chemical inventory and interact with the chemical supplier for advice on training or issues related to sanitation.
  • Participate in the development and auditing of SSOPs.
  • Work directly with Ecolab or chemical company to drive best practices in all MMPA plants
  • Enforce safety and GMP policies and maintain superior plant cleanliness.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Position Requirements 

  • Complexity: Previous experience in food production/manufacturing environments including a general knowledge of food ingredients and processing equipment. Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and time management skills and must display strong leadership qualities.
  • Working Conditions: Most time will be spent in a production environment working with production machinery. Sometime will be spent at a desk using various office equipment including a computer, fax machine, telephone, etc.
  • Physical Demands: While performing duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, use hands to finger, handle control, and to talk or hear. The associate is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The associate is occasionally required to sit. The associate may be required to lift 25 pounds routinely, and up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Safety/ Hazards: This position requires the ability to understand and follow policy and procedures of safety rules and regulations. This manager and the manager's subordinates will have exposure to steam, chemicals, wet conditions, elevated platforms, and a variety of production equipment.
  • Travel: This position requires travel to all 4 MMPA plants on a regular basis. Approximately 75% travel. 

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have 5 years of progressive experience in food sanitation with supervisory responsibilities
  • The applicant must be familiar with the theory and application of clean in place (CIP), clean out of place (COP), SSOPs and effectively present these concepts to plant operations team members
  • Applicants must have knowledge of Regulatory requirements with respect to food production and sanitation (OSHA, FSMA, , Sanitation Controls,  GMPs, and SSOPs)
  • Applicants are required to have practical experience in sanitation practices
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English, English/Spanish) is preferred, but not required. 
  • Applicant should have MS Office related computer skills. This manager must demonstrate the ability to facilitate change by involving employees in continually improved processes.
