POSITION: Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) is seeking to fill a part-time or ¾ time Legal Assistant position. The Legal Assistant will provide crucial support services to the legal team, helping to streamline operations and enhance productivity. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, a high degree of attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. The Legal Assistant will play a key role in facilitating the smooth operation of the legal department by assisting with document management, scheduling, and communication tasks.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MILS, is a statewide provider of free legal services to low-income Native Americans and others in the tribal communities MILS represents individuals, families, tribes and organizations in cases that span a range of tribal and federal Indian law cases.
Essential Functions
Responsible for answering incoming calls and requests; performing intake screening for clients and case management system data entry; provide assistance with case work; responsible for assuring that all requests by attorneys are performed in a manner that assures that attorneys receive the high quality work that is expected of professionals; typing; creating new case files, filing, document retention; assisting in the preparation, formatting, and editing of legal documents and reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with company standards; assist with the managing of the legal team's calendar, including scheduling meetings, appointments, and deadlines; machine operation: copier/scanner/fax, telephone; greeting clients or vendors; processing incoming and outgoing mail; maintain outreach materials and data entry of outreach activities; attend outreach events as requested; assist in file organization and scheduling clients if requested; and other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school education, additional certification in legal or administrative fields is a plus; Previous experience in an administrative support role, preferably within a legal or corporate setting; Strong organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with legal document management software; Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills; Discretion in handling confidential information; and Experience working with Native Americans and low income individuals preferred.
