Title: Diabetes Program Associate

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose: Under the direction of the MDHHS Diabetes and Kidney Unit manager, this position serves as the Diabetes Program Associate and will support implementation of the Supporting Students with Diabetes in School (SSDS) project. The purpose of the SSDS project is to develop and implement a coordinated strategy to enhance care for students with diabetes in schools. This position will assist in coordination of the SSDS Workgroup and organize and assist with implementation of project activities and evaluation. This work will be completed by working directly with MDHHS, other state agencies, schools, and other partners both virtually and in person.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as staffing assistance for the Supporting Students with Diabetes in Schools Workgroup
  • Develop and maintain relationships with MDHHS Diabetes and Other Chronic Diseases Section and Adolescent and School Health Section staff, workgroup members, and partners.
  • Coordinate statewide and regional meetings and trainings, including scheduling with schools and trainers.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and/or implement meeting and training logistics including conference and meeting facilities, communication materials, trainers/speakers, participants, registration, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Develop and distribute meeting/training materials such as announcements, handouts, and attachments.
  • Apply and procure CE approval for trainings, administer on site and handle post meeting requirements and documents.
  • Provide regular budget/expenditure updates and seek approval as required.
  • Review all communication material for accuracy, completeness, grammar, format, and accessibility.
  • Participate on SSDS Evaluation Team which guides the evaluation process of the project
  • Work with the Diabetes Public Health Consultant and State School Nurse Consultant and the Michigan Association of School Nurses to develop and conduct surveys or special studies to conceptualize local issues, determine needs, and assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services including promoting the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts!
  • Analyze on-going program operations and recommend modifications of policies and procedures to achieve better efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Assist in updates, maintenance, and training of diabetes-focused policies and practices as necessary
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI projects and always represent the best interest of MPHI.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major. Possession of an associate's degree in nursing and a minimum of 2 years' experience in diabetes care can be substituted for a bachelor's degree.

Experience: In addition to education, one to three years' experience in diabetes care is required. Additional related and progressively more responsible work experience in project assistance/coordination preferred

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: Occasional Leaders: Occasional leaders lead some projects and serve as a team member on others. The program associate will function independently regarding communication and technical assistance to partners and funded agencies; development of problem-solving approaches; trouble shooting project activities; documentation and maintenance of relevant reports, correspondence, and contracts; meetings, appointments, and travel arrangements/schedule; collaboration and communication with multiple partners and interest holders.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position is a member of the MDHHS Diabetes and Other Chronic Diseases Section staff and is responsible for assisting with projects as indicated. To meet the growing need for staff support and collaboration on community-based initiatives, this position provides the necessary staffing for recently added projects and responsibilities within the Section. This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.
