Position Summary

The research assistant will join a research lab focused on understanding the effects of features of diabetes on the progression/severity of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. The position will involve work with rodent models and mammalian cell culture. The experimental duties will include rodent handling, husbandry, tissue/blood collection, and performing behavioral tests. Applicant will also carry out tissue processing and perform experimental techniques such as western blotting, ddPCR, and stereology.

The position is in the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Patterson in the Department of Translational Neuroscience, located at the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, 400 Monroe Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in molecular biology, neuroscience, genetics, biochemistry or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques such as pipefitting, buffer preparation, performing solution/dilution calculations, and microscopy; may require software specific molecular biology ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Applicant should be self-motivated, reliable, detailed oriented, and attentive to instructions/protocols. Applicant must be able to work in a team environment and have good communications skills. Applicant should have experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or equivalent.

Prior laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting. Experience with rodent handling and husbandry (blood/tissue collection, intraperitoneal injections, post-mortem tissue processing. Experience with mammalian cell culture. Experience with experimental techniques such as tissue sectioning, protein/RNA isolation, western blotting, ddPCR, stereology, or other assays. Prior experience in diabetes or neuroscience research is a preferred.
