What are the responsibilities and job description for the FOCB Law Clerk (Part-time) position at Michigan Supreme Court?
The Friend of the Court Bureau (FOCB) was established to provide circuit courts across the state with management assistance in operating local Friend of the Court (FOC) offices, including the development of local policies and procedures. Essential FOCB duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Develop policies and procedures for court and FOC operations,
· Establish and implement child support policy and guidelines,
· Develop and publish information pamphlets for public use,
· Collect and analyze data regarding Friend of the Court operations,
· Provide training to new FOCB clerks,
· Research new and updated laws and regulations relating to child support and custody;
· Analyze federal and state legislation and establish policy,
· Assist in the development of public service information distributed statewide,
· Write articles for the FOCB newsletter, The Pundit, which is quarterly distributed to all FOC offices and posted on the FOCB Website,
· Compiling and reviewing grievances as part of statutory requirements.
· The FOCB Law Clerk will primarily be involved in providing consistent and accurate information to telephone, correspondence, and e-mail inquiries from the public and FOC offices statewide. The position will also perform the following duties:
Assist in research tasks to provide accurate responses to customer service inquiries.
o Assist FOCB analysts by performing research and writing tasks.
o Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
· Enrollment in law school or accredited graduate program preferred, with first semester classes complete. Applicants with less than two (2) terms of classes before graduation will not be considered.
· Classes and demonstrated interest in family issues or public policy preferred but not required.
· Experience working with diverse populations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Ability to enter and access information from a computer.
· Ability to perform light filing tasks.
SCHEDULE: This job offers flexible scheduling, the ability to take time off during final exams (unpaid), and a flexible in-person/remote work environment. Candidate may be required to work in-person and remotely pursuant to a remote work agreement and must have access to Wi-Fi. This position is a minimum of 12-25 hours/week for approximately nine (9) months (negotiable).
WORK LOCATION: Primary work location is at the Hall of Justice in Lansing, Michigan; however, requests for remote work arrangements will be considered and may be authorized, subject to any restrictions.
