COMMODITY MANAGER
ROLE PURPOSE
We are looking for a dynamic Commodity Buyer to join our procurement team. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying opportunities to optimize spending and leading supplier sourcing initiatives. This role involves the entire procurement process, from identifying suppliers to negotiating contracts and awarding business. Additionally, the Commodity Buyer will support various procurement activities, including maintaining commodity structures and making decisions on Make vs. Buy.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Identify Procurement Opportunities
Spend Analysis: Analyze spend data and commodity categories to uncover improvement opportunities.
Data Utilization: Leverage purchase price trends, index trends, and should-cost modeling to support analyses and quantify potential savings.
Engineering Collaboration: Review part families to identify where minor engineering changes can yield significant material savings.
Recommendations: Provide actionable insights to the procurement manager on which commodity categories should undergo competitive bidding.
Conduct Competitive Bid Programs
Supplier Identification: Identify potential suppliers through the procurement team’s network and desktop research.
RFQ Development: Define parts and volumes for competitive bids and prepare RFQ packages.
Supplier Outreach: Lead buyers in communicating bid packages to supplier candidates, emphasizing value propositions.
Bid Analysis: Evaluate supplier bids to assess their impact on annual spend.
Lead Negotiations
Strategy Preparation: Develop sourcing and negotiation strategies.
Negotiation Execution: Conduct negotiations with suppliers.
Supplier Requirements: Ensure that suppliers meet comprehensive company requirements, including quality and capacity.
Additional Support Activities
Procurement Support: Assist the procurement manager and buyers with expanding commodity classifications and data analytics for Make vs. Buy decisions.
Innovation Sharing: Leverage supplier expertise to capture innovations and collaborate with the engineering team to enhance productivity.
Tracking and Reporting
Documentation: Maintain logs and tracking materials for sourcing programs, including bid statuses, pricing, and savings potential.
Status Updates: Provide regular updates to the Procurement Director, VP of Operations, and other leadership members.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Operations, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
Experience: 5 years in a manufacturing industry, ideally in a project-oriented role.
Technical Skills: Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel, with strong analytical capabilities.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and detail orientation.
Independence: Self-starter with a proactive approach.
Background: Experience in procurement, sourcing, or supply chain roles.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Business Case Models: Experience building business case models in Excel.
Spend Data Analysis: Demonstrated ability to analyze spend data effectively.
Negotiation Leadership: Previous experience leading negotiations.
Engineering Drawings: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
