PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the oversight of a supervisor or Foreman, a Water System Maintenance Worker assists in performing essential maintenance and repairs of water facility infrastructure. This includes repairs and maintenance to water mains, service lines, streets/sidewalks and fire hydrants; repair and replacement of meter boxes; and assists in the general cleanup of facilities including painting, repairing, and maintaining Company owned or operated facilities.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under direction, excavate and expose service/main leaks; isolate damage and assist in repairing or replacing assets; notify customers.
  • Assist in repairs and maintenance activities of meters, meter boxes, service lines, mains, wells, pump stations, and fences.
  • Assist in flushing and performing maintenance on all necessary functions of mains; operate various hand and power tools in the completion of these activities.
  • Assist in setting, replacing, and/or removing 1 ½" to 2" size meters.
  • Under direction conduct all water discharges with Company's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) policy including, but not limited to, implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs), monitoring and recording all required data, and completing necessary paperwork related to all discharge events.
  • Prepare and operate service truck(s) daily, the loading of needed materials and equipment, remove and dispose of debris, clean equipment and truck as needed.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Change, repair, and clean meter boxes/lids, valve covers.
  • Clean, paint, repair, and maintain Company owned or operated facilities.
  • May perform other functions as outlined in the CBA section 8 W2 (Water Distribution Operator Certification).
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS

A WSMW must be able to effectively communicate with their supervisor, co-workers, and the public; have the ability to perform basic mathematic functions to calculate figures; and have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; and ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent, possess a valid California Class C Driver's license, and be insurable under the Company's policy.

A WSMW II must have a working knowledge of basic features of word processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Word) and electronic mail processing programs (e.g., Microsoft Outlook). Employees must be able to work with supervision and respond appropriately to direction, feedback, evaluation, coaching, counseling, and/or discipline.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, a WSMW works in the field with exposure to local climate and weather conditions. This may include dust, wind, rain, snow, heat, or cold. The terrain is varied and the employee may need to ambulate on uneven dirt, gravel, asphalt, or in muddy conditions. The employee works around chlorine tanks and may be exposed to hazardous materials such as but not limited to sodium hypochlorite, gas, and diesel fumes. The noise level in the work environment varies and hearing protection may be required during certain activities.

Employees in this position may be required to wear personal protective equipment depending on work task.

Employees working in environments where noise exceeds the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) of 85 db in an eight-hour workday shall be required to wear hearing protection.

Appropriate footwear based on the nature of the job and the work environment must be worn at all times. Field jobs require approved safety shoes, as outlined in the Company's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Procedure. Should an employee have a question or concern about the type of shoe required to do their job, they are to contact their Safety Program Manager or Human Resources Business Partner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, a WSMW is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, grip, grasp, or feel objects, and controls; frequently required to reach forward, upward and downward with hands and arms; frequently required to talk and converse on a one-to-one basis with supervisors, coworkers and the public; and frequently required to listen and hear verbal conversations and commands. The employee is frequently required to walk on uneven terrain, dirt, or muddy conditions. There is occasional sitting while driving; and frequently required to stoop, squat, and bend when performing work activities.

A WSMW must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job. Sufficient strength to lift heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and sufficient stamina to perform strenuous work for an extended period of time. A Water System Maintenance Worker II must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Vision requirements include qualified vision to maintain a California driver's license.

A WSMW must be capable of conducting duties in a safe, efficient manner that will ensure personal safety and that of co-workers and the public; must follow Company's Safety Policies and Procedures. Use safe working methods in conformance with Cal/OSHA regulations and applicable regulatory standards.

Pay: $25.00 - $27.00 per hour
