Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN), a 501c3 collaborative, is comprised of hundreds of partners and thousands of community members. Mid-City CAN’s mission is to build a safe, productive, and healthy community through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing. For over 35 years, Mid-City CAN plays an essential role in the community and the San Diego Region by facilitating dialogue, identifying common issues, spearheading advocacy efforts, building power, and training community members to take leadership roles in affecting change. Some of our campaign wins include $5.1 million towards two skate parks and a recreation center, the Halal school lunch program, and a regional no-cost transit pass for youth (Youth
Opportunity Pass). Reporting to the Organizing Director, the Base-Builder, works to assist the Youth Council on their year-round programming, including communicating and building relationships with community team members, their families, and ongoing implementation of Youth Council community organizing and advocacy campaigns. Duties include developing materials, data-entry, organizing program files and materials, phone-banking, emailing, texting, door-knocking (as assigned), assisting with meetings, events and actions, and other tasks as assigned. This Base Builder position will be assigned to the Mid-City CAN Youth Council’s campaign to advance park equity and outdoor experiences.
Key Duties and Responsibilities :
- Conduct one-on-ones for the purpose of building relationships for Mid-City CAN Youth Council
- Staying apprised of local youth supportive services and resources to make referrals for youth and their families
- Support Youth Team Staff to coordinate youth projects, summer field trips, events, and meetings including preparing and collecting youth permission slip and filing
- Set-up and manage Youth Council’s registration for meetings and events
- Create content for social media and emails to promote Youth Council community engagement
- Prepare materials for youth council weekly meetings and activities
- Document Youth Council activities via Instagram and Nation Builder- post on IG stories, inform followers and supporters about their activities
- Phone-banking and text banking to youth members weekly to ensure attendance
- Track and update Youth Council member attendance to comply with grant reporting
- Complete weekly data entry and progress reports in a timely manner. Follow Mid-City CAN processes for reporting and filing.
- Use Microsoft Office Suite, Nation Builder database, and other computer technologies.
- Conduct outreach to schools, agencies, and collaborative partners that service City Heights to recruit members; such and not limited to tabling or group presentations.
- Clearly articulate the efforts of Mid-City CAN and our community development strategy
- Execute assigned campaign plans, project work plans, adhere to timelines and deadlines, and use Mid-City CAN planning tools
- Some weekend work, evening work every Friday, and periodic overnight travel is required :
Every week, Friday, 3pm-7pm except on holidays and when high school academics take precedence. The Base Builder is expected to work regularly every Friday unless given approval in advance.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment : Work is performed in an office or community setting; employee regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communications; employee should be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position works in community settings, may be standing at event table, and walks neighborhood for several hours on as needed basis. The employee may spend periods of time sitting, standing, or walking. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Compensation : The hourly wage range for this full-time, nonexempt position is $25-30 per hour,
commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.
