POSITION SUMMARY
The Admitting Clerk is responsible for processing all registrations for inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency room services, obtaining accurate and complete information. The clerk completes pre-certification and verification of insurance as well as calculates and collects patient share due for service rendered. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital’s customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Collects accurate and complete information on all patients receiving services according to hospital policy.
2. Prepares a patient packet for each patient and distributes copies to other departments according to policy.
3. Obtains insurance pre-certification and verification accurately and timely, according to hospital policy.
4. Calculates patient share due and collects monies from patients receiving services according to hospital policy.
5. Handles telephone inquiries as they relate to patient registration in a courteous and professional manner.
6. Works with other departments, including physicians, to coordinate patient care and room assignment.
7. Assumes responsibility and is self motivated.
8. Supports the hospital’s philosophy, goals and objectives.
9. Demonstrates knowledge through compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent. Typing skill - 35 wpm, 10-key skills. Prefer one year business office experience with good communication skills. Knowledge in medical terminology preferred.
Physical Demands Must be able to work eight (8) hours, stand/walk seven (7) hours or more of normal shift; bend, stoop, squat, reach above shoulder level; lift supplies weighing less than 25 pounds; push patients in a wheelchair weighing up to 200 pounds. Hearing capability ranging from understanding a whispered command to withstanding loud equipment/alarm noises.
Work Conditions Must be flexible, regularly scheduled 8 hour shifts Monday through Friday, weekends if needed. This position operates within the confines of the hospital building in a general office environment which is heated and air-conditioned. Exposed to computer and copier equipment and staff noise, equipment noise and interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple patients and workload.
