JOB DESCRIPTION: SECONDARY COUNSELOR

SALARY SCHEDULE: CERTIFIED TEACHER SCHEDULE

DEPARTMENT: SECONDARY INSTRUCTION

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

SAFETY-SENSITIVE: YES

POSITION SUMMARY:

The counselor promotes student success, provides preventive services, and responds to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive developmental school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development of secondary students.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Master’s Degree in counseling or related field.
  • Oklahoma Teaching Certification in Secondary Education in areas listed below or Alternative Teaching Certification as approved by Oklahoma State Department of Education required.
    • Secondary Counselor (7-12); School Counselor (PK-12 or All)
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides academic counseling to all students including providing academic options, course and subject selection, preparing for future pathway opportunities, and communicating with parents as necessary.

Evaluates transcripts of incoming students, maintains records of current students.

Coordinates and delivers appropriate prevention programs.

Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of evaluation.

Provides social-emotional support through one-on-one counseling, arranging outside counseling services, and utilizing district resources.

Provides career counseling to all students including processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.

Provides in-service training in counseling related topics for teachers and staff.

Conduct student assessment and maintain records of test results

Listen to students’ concerns and offer recommendations effective in addressing academic or psychological problems

Additional duties that may be assigned by immediate supervisor or above.

LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fume or airborne particles. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold (including outdoors), extreme heat (including direct sunlight), risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment will vary from somewhat loud to extremely loud.

To ensure continuity of services, a different work location may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for a varied work location will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for this change will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Employee may occasionally be required to supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.
