We are seeking a full-time Mortgage Manager to join our team! Candidates must have a strong sense of leadership to fulfill certain duties within the position. The individual chosen will be responsible for the daily supervision of the Mortgage Origination process, to include origination, processing, closing and all related functions.



Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Providing work direction on a daily basis, which includes training and monitoring the work of department personnel. Carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws, employee relations, problem solving, and performance coaching. Limiting credit union vulnerability by assuring cross-training within the departments. Making recommendations relative to hiring, termination, employee appraisals, promotions, salary adjustments, awards, and employee development programs, in accordance with established personnel and salary administration policy and procedures.
  • Reviewing, evaluating and auditing mortgage files submitted using sound judgement and knowledge of investor guidelines, which includes assuring compliance to guidelines based on income, credit, collateral and assets and approving or denying loan applications, making appropriate counteroffers and recommendations when possible.
  • Pipeline Management: Monitoring and organizing workflow within the Mortgage Origination area and reviewing procedures to simplify operations and create efficiencies while keeping the pipeline from becoming stagnant by working with management to assure rate locks do not expire as a result of inactivity.
  • Performing functions of Underwriter, Processor, Closer, and Opener/Clerk as needed.
  • Keeping staff up to date regarding changes to investor guidelines, pricing, software, etc. as well as informed of current trends in mortgage lending and market factors affecting mortgage lending, suggesting and implementing new products and services to make mortgage offerings more competitive. Supporting management with department projects.


Performance Measurements include:


  • Assuring member service is top priority, which includes treating members and other employees professionally with courtesy and respect and upholding the MHV Service Standards.
  • Remaining proficient with both automated and manual underwriting, including the specific documentation and guidelines that apply to each.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of mortgage products, guidelines and policies for our investors (FNMA, FHLMC, SONYMA, MHV, etc.) and using sound judgement and knowledge of guidelines to review mortgage files and approve accordingly.
  • Exercising judgment, initiative and discretion regarding mortgage origination policies and procedures and performing continual policy and procedural reviews to assure compliance and look for efficiencies.
  • Reviewing files assigned to department personnel in an effort to troubleshoot potential problems, which include assisting with the workload of other mortgage personnel to assure smooth workflow and consistency of the department's output and assisting in the training of mortgage department personnel.
  • Producing the department's budgeted loan volume (dollars and/or numbers.) Facilitating timely pipeline turnaround from application to closing.
  • Maintaining a presence with local mortgage affiliations to promote the Credit Union.
  • Making valid suggestions regarding improvements to processes, forms, or functions in work area.
  • Is a good team player, which includes promoting a positive, productive and supportive work environment.
  • Stays abreast of current trends affecting the financial services industry; has an overall knowledge of the
    credit union, its policies and procedures. Continually expands knowledge and develop skills.



Knowledge and Skills:


  • Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.
  • A bachelor's degree, or achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).
  • Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is of a personal or sensitive nature. Motivating, influencing, and/or training others is key at this level. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
  • Strong time management; ability to manage multiple workloads with successful results; ability to work independently; organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, listening skills, problem analysis and problem resolution; aboveaverage interpersonal skills; strong computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office)
  • Knowledge of the secondary market and experience with first and second mortgage residential real estate lending.
  • Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Normal range of vision and hearing abilities required. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
  • Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

  • Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence.
  • Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Sedentary, sitting, standing, walking, occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from floor, bending, frequent near vision use for reading and computer use, standard office equipment available.
