JOB SUMMARY/GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PURPOSE:
The person in this position is responsible for maintaining a safe, friendly, positive, and comfortable atmosphere for all shelter guests. The Assistant Shelter Manager works as a member of the Homeless Shelter team to best meet the needs of Shelter guests and works to contribute to the community’s prevention of homelessness.
This is a FT Overnight position.
PRIMARYJOB DUTIES
- Assists in training new shelter attendants. Sets a standard to be followed by all staff with common practice and use of procedures.
- Assures that all Fire Drills are run, and equipment is current.
- Assists with overseeing Kitchen Manager.
- Inventories Shelter Supplies.
- Supports Shelter Manager (SM) with administrative duties.
- Reviews shift notes for accuracy and follow up with SM.
- Meets with SM at least 1x per week for supervision.
- Reviews and categorizes incident reports.
- Assists with eval process and review for training opportunities.
- Works with Youth Program Coordinator re: store/donations.
- Manages house meetings-complete agenda, lead meeting, document with notes and follow up with SH.
- Supports guest activities committee.
- Attends meetings with Volunteer Manager and Kitchen Manager.
- May participate in coaching shelter attendants.
- Maintains basic inventory and works with Shelter Manager to put inventory controls in place.
- Responsible for keeping the medication log current and up to date.
- Helps Shelter Manager manage the donation center items and keeps the entry way clear when on shift.
- Responsible for one weekend coverage per month.
- Participates in On-Call rotation.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining weekly chore charts for shelter attendants and guests.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides supervision and direction to guests and volunteers fostering a safe, friendly, positive, and comfortable atmosphere for all guests.
- Creates maintenance requests via BHR.
- Document and report any concerns to the Shelter Manager.
- Assists guests with laundry needs including distribution of soap. Strips beds of guests who do not show up and launders bedding.
- Acts as liaison with community providers as needed.
- Answers and logs phone calls taking messages or connecting callers to the appropriate staff person when needed. Distributes mail to the appropriate guests when received.
- Ensures all guests and volunteers are adhering to the Shelter policies and procedures.
- Provides intake to emergency guests, documenting all required information as needed.
- Completes routine and/or any assigned shelter maintenance tasks on any given evening.
- Attends staff meetings and management team meetings. Comes prepared to actively participate.
- Exhibits a positive professional attitude with guests, co-workers, clients, partners and within the community.
- Must have a current driver’s license and a reliable, insured vehicle.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: College course work relative to the Human Services field is preferred. Two to three years of work or volunteer experience with a vulnerable population will be considered in lieu of college course work.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Experience working with people with mental illness and substance abuse challenges, basic knowledge of homelessness and its causes, ability to make a commitment to the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter’s mission and organizational values.
