Overview

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are students who have successfully completed a historically difficult course and been identified as having excellent content-area knowledge and learning and study strategies. To promote student learning and success, SI Leaders are responsible for attending class lectures and facilitating optional study and review sessions for students enrolled in these targeted courses. SI Leaders identify challenging content and develop session activities to help students learn, process, and apply course material. They encourage peer-to-peer interactions and collaboration, integrating “how to learn” strategies into their sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all lectures for the selected course, take notes, review homework, and read assigned materials.
  • Facilitate weekly learning and study session, promoting peer-to-peer interactions and integrating a variety of “how to learn” strategies into sessions.
  • Develop SI session plans for each SI session and upload them to Moodle or Google Drive (as directed by supervisor).
  • Create handouts or other activities to encourage collaboration, learning, and problem-solving.
  • Communicate with course instructor throughout the term to identify difficult content to process, practice, or review in SI sessions.
  • Meet with supervisor to discuss SI session observations, collaborative activities, learning/study strategies, or potential problems or challenges.
  • Assist with SI outreach activities and communicate SI session content and availability to students.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of SI session participants and protect student confidentiality as required by FERPA laws.
  • Participate in required training workshops, continued professional development sessions, and departmental meetings.
  • Create a peer atmosphere and encourage students to reflect on and develop their learning, study, research, and problem-solving strategies for academic success. Facilitate student insights and promote independence in learning.
  • Support and serve as a role model for our mission, vision, strategic and service initiatives. Adhere to the organization’s policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to further departmental goals.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Knowledge of course content and understanding of Supplemental Instruction principles and group facilitation strategies.
    • Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to facilitate collaborative learning activities, redirect questions, and explain course concepts and demonstrate effective study strategies.
    • Basic writing and computer skills to document SI sessions and prepare session plans and summary reports.
    • Ability to respond to students’ academic concerns in a courteous and respectful manner.

    Education, Certification, Licensure:

    • HS Diploma or Equivalent
    • Completion of selected course(s) with a grade of 3.0 or above within the last three years
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for all college coursework
    • Degree-seeking Mid student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits preferred

    Experience/Other Requirements:

    • At least two positive academic references (from faculty or staff familiar with student’s content-area knowledge, study strategies, and communication skills)
    • Willingness to participate in SI Leader training and ongoing professional development sessions and monthly meetings

    Working Environment

    • The job responsibilities of this position are performed in a learning support facility, classroom, or lab, which requires a professional image and demeanor, on-time attendance and reliability. The environment has little, if any discomfort due to heat, cold or dust. There is light noise within the environment.
    • There may be occasional travel to other college locations for meetings.
    • There may be occasional travel for training or ongoing professional development.
    • Duties are performed in an independent atmosphere without close direct supervision.
    • The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (5- 45 pounds).
    • Must meet reasonable and sometimes shifting deadlines, priorities, or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.
    • Work schedule is determined by supervisor with flexible or extended hours as needed by department demands.
