Position : Legal Assistant - Paralegal / Community Clinics Interpreter and Case Manager

MMLA partners with community-based organizations to offer in-person legal services where our clients live and work.MMLA currently hosts six Community Clinics in Minneapolis : Community Clinics - Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid.Our Clinic Attorneys work at their clinic sites 2 – 3 days per week. The remainder of the time, they work remotely or in our downtown office.Our Community Clinics strive to be accessible, flexible, and responsive. In relationship with our community partners, we also grow in our cultural literacy.This position will primarily staff our clinic at African Community Services (ACS), and it will support the ACS attorneys and our team at the Brian Coyle Center.RESPONSIBILITIES :
Staff the legal clinic at African Community Services (ACS) at least three days per week.Administer the ACS clinic. This includes :Scheduling intake and client meetings
Following up with clientsScanning and uploading client documentsMaintaining client filesDrafting and sending correspondenceDrafting and filing basic legal documentsProvide live interpretation from Somali to English and back.Translate documents from English to Somali and back.Advise MMLA on additional ways to connect with the East African community.Assist MMLA staff on growing in East African cultural literacy.Coordinate ACS’s and MMLA's complimentary services.Eventually notarize documents.Eventually represent clients in immigration matters as a USCIS-accredited representative, with MMLA’s supervision.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Fluency in Somali.Familiarity with East African history and culture.Basic understanding of legal processes and terminology.Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain detailed records, and ensure timely handling of clinics matters.Proficiency in both written and verbal communication to effectively coordinate with MMLA staff, clients, and community partners.Strong relationship-building skills to maintain and develop partnerships with community partners.Adaptability to adjusting to changes in the clinic landscape and the needs of the program.Willingness to collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders to achieve common goals.QUALIFICATIONS :
Required Qualifications :
Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of people with low incomes and other vulnerable clients.Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.Fluency in Somali.Willingness to fulfill requirements to become Notary and USCIS-accredited representative.Ability to learn new technologies, software systems, and processes as they are deployed.Strong attention to detail.Preferred Qualifications :
2 years relevant experience.Proficiency with a PDF manipulation software such as Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Phantom, electronic discovery processing, document imaging applications, and litigation support applications.Strong connection to the East African community in Minneapolis.Experience working in a nonprofit environment.Knowledge of litigation process, including document production and other discovery projects, document management and trial procedures.Familiarity with e-filing / e-serving.Paralegal certificate.Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences.COMPENSATION :
52,661 - $62,919 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Employees are paid for five full days of work but enjoy Friday afternoons off. Benefits include family medical and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 403(b) with employer match, FSA, employee assistance programs, and generous paid time off. Employees qualify for benefits on the first day of employment.
