An Industrial HVAC Technician is an intermediate-level maintenance position. Employees in this job have generalized maintenance skills and apply those skills to the continuing operation and repair of equipment and facilities at Mid South Extrusion. This role involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and chiller systems. This role is critical to maintaining a comfortable and efficient work environment in our manufacturing facilities. 

Essential Functions 

Essential functions for Industrial HVAC Technician are: 

System Installation and Configuration 

  • Install, assemble, and configure industrial HVAC systems, including chillers, air handlers, and ductwork. 
  • Ensure all equipment is properly connected and calibrated for optimal performance. 

Preventative Maintenance 

  • Conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential issues before they become critical. 
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, replacing filters, checking refrigerant levels, and testing system performance. 

Troubleshooting and Repair 

  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues in HVAC systems. 
  • Replace or repair faulty components such as compressors, motors, sensors, and valves. 

System Optimization 

  • Monitor HVAC systems to ensure efficient energy usage and adherence to operational standards. 
  • Recommend and implement system upgrades to improve performance and reduce costs. 

Safety and Compliance 

  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations. 
  • Handle refrigerants and hazardous materials safely and in accordance with EPA guidelines. 

Documentation and Reporting 

  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities. 
  • Prepare reports on system conditions and suggest improvements for long-term efficiency. 

PPE requirements and Safety Rules 

 Eye protection is required everywhere in the plant 

  • Hearing protection is required everywhere in the plant 
  • Safety-toe shoes or boots are required everywhere in the plant. 
  • Equipment must be properly locked out to prevent exposure to hazardous energy. 
  • Fall protection equipment must be worn when there is exposure to fall potential. 
  • Cut gloves must be worn on the opposite hand to hold a knife when cutting. 
  • The maximum weight allowed to be lifted by one person is 80 pounds.  Anything heavier requires aid from another person, a forklift, a Big Joe, or the roll handlers. 
  • Face shields are required to be worn anytime you are over the die during start-up. 
  • Each machine is equipped with multiple safety switches and devices. Although the features are not the same for each machine, they all have safety devices to help protect you. These include pressure-sensitive mats, light curtains, pull cords, and emergency stop buttons. 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent (vocational training preferred). 
  • Certification in HVAC technology (HVAC-R) and EPA Section 608 Certification for refrigerant handling. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with industrial HVAC systems. 
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems. 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. 
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, such as multimeters and pressure gauges. 

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces. 
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and facility management. 

Work Environment: 

  • Industrial facilities with exposure to varying temperatures, loud machinery, and occasional hazardous conditions. 
  • May require on-call availability and occasional overtime for emergency repairs. 

 

Physical Demands  

A Maintenance Apprentice must be able to lift up to 80 pounds. Employees in this position must be capable of reaching overhead approximately 10% of the day, squatting, kneeling, bending, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, and/or standing as much as 80% of the day, and sitting as much as 20% of the day.  Sitting occurs while working on the computer with parts listing, entering records, and performing other HVAC work. 

This position must be able to climb onto and operate a forklift reaching pedals and controls with both hands and feet. A HAC Technician must be capable of operating hand controls for equipment such as chain hoists and other equipment requiring the use of hand and finger dexterity. The ability to climb stairs to access the tops of the extrusion towers is essential to this role as is the capacity to work at elevated heights while standing on open grating work platforms. 

Persons in a HVAC Technician role must be able to see, hear, and speak with reasonable clarity. 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position.  General work hours for the day shift employees are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May require on-call availability and occasional overtime for emergency repairs
